I have created a course in Rise with some links to external websites. When you click on the link within the editing window the link website opens in a new target window. However, when you publish the course the link opens in the same window forcing the learner to use the back button every time they want to return to the course. Is there a way round this so all links open in new target windows?
The code is set to open links in new windows always.
Can you share a link to where it's happening in same window? Perhaps it's
in an environment that's wrapping some code around the course that's
preventing it from running properly.
We've got other links in the Note blocks in a different course which are opening in a new target window. Do you want me to send you the link for that one?
https://rise.articulate.com/share/MCJnmilY6DQ_JEa4 - The link to Acas opens in a new window but the link to Citizens Advice opens in the same window. Not sure if it's something to do with whether the website is secure....
I apologize for the delay in getting this bug fixed. It turned out to be a bit more tricky than expected. We are actively working on it and I'll update this thread as soon as we have a solution in place.
In the meantime, have you tried removing and recreating the link. The behavior is a currently a bit random, so doing so might work for you.
Thanks for your response. Unfortunately adding a space after the link does not work and I do already have some links which are at the end of the line which ARE opening in target windows so I don't think this is the problem.
I tried removing the links and adding them again as per the suggestion by Michael. This worked for me but does not work for my colleague.
All of her links which are (http not https) which were initially launching in the existing window are now not launching at all! She has tried removing them and adding them again and they still don't open at all and it has no effect when she adds a space after the link.
Thanks Alena for the update - and as Mike mentioned it's a bit random, so working for you and not your colleague isn't totally unexpected. They're continuing to look into the fix for this one, so we'll keep you posted here about any changes to that!
We made some updates to how links are handled and they should now work as expected. You will need to recreate any of the existing problematic links. Please let us know if you still see issues.
Hi Mike - we have re-created the links and they are now all opening correctly within a new target window. Thanks for all your help in getting this resolved.
I have the exact opposite need. I need my external links to stay within the same web tab (window). Instead, it's opening a new tab.
Basically, I'm adding an external quiz run by learndash LMS so I can track completion on learndash. The link works but opens a new page and I'm unable to hard code the link.
Within Rise the links are set to open in a new tab. Editing the HTML would be a feature request at this time, and I'd love for you to share your thoughts through our feature request form. Thanks!
So is there no way to make the links open over the existing content then? I have a project I'm working on where I have labeled graphic and on one of the labels I have placed a URL of another section of the Rise content. I want users to be able to click on that link and jump to that section, but so far it just opens it in a new tab and nothing I have tried to prevent this has worked at this point. I do see where in other areas you can make a button that can do that, but not in the labeled graphic it seems.
Hi Vincent - yes, that's right. URLs that you hyperlink in your Rise course will always open in a new browser tab.
Buttons are a great way to get from one place in Rise to another, but it sounds like you need to open that capability up in other areas. I'll submit a feature request for you; if you have more ideas, you can do that here!
It seems most natural to let the author set the target attribute for links and buttons. I need target="_top" because our content is in an iframe, and want to lead the learner to our course main page (in an LMS).
Hi John, and thanks for sharing what would work for you. Would you be able to fully describe your needs in a feature request for our development team to track? Thanks!

At first look, it appears it's an issue when the links are used inside
those Note blocks. But we'll figure it out and fix it.
We've got other links in the Note blocks in a different course which are opening in a new target window. Do you want me to send you the link for that one?
Sure, please.

Hi Adam - I wondered if you've had any luck with fixing this?
Thanks
Alena
Hi Alena - we are looking into this as we speak. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your patience.
Hi Adam - any update on this issue please?
Many thanks

Thanks for the update Michael. I'll try that and let you know if it's successful.
Hi Alena
I noted that in you examples the problem seemed to be where the link did not have any text after it.
I did a test and that seemed to be the issue:
https://rise.articulate.com/share/LUR8o2ZFFVCZqu2K
Basically the problem seems to relate to the link being on the end of a line
The first link does not open new page and when inspecting the code
The second link has target blank

Anyone know how to accomplish this?
where can I hard code the links from the main menu? It's a jumbled mess.
So another thing that doesn't make sense is why give me an Export as a web if I can't customize the html? I've paid, so what harm would that do.
