Click "Record Narration" and nothing happens

Oct 14, 2013

Hello,

I recently installed Studio '13 and I'm trying to record a new presentation but am running into a problem.

When I click on the "Record Narration" button nothing happens. It appears that a window quickly pops up and immediately disappears. It happens so fast I can barely see it.

I am on Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. I am using PowerPoint 2007 with SP3.

Can anyone please help?

Thanks!

Drew

Hi Drew and welcome to E-Learning Heroes (I know you're not totally new, but I haven't seen you around since I've been here)!

If you're unable to record narration in Articulate Presenter, confirm that your PowerPoint presentation is located on your local hard drive (typically your C: drive). Working on a network drive or an external USB drive can cause erratic behavior.

You can check out this knowledgebase article for further troubleshooting.

I'm experiencing the same problem of Clicking "Record Narration" (using a legit version of PPT 2010) and nothing happens . I read and followed the system requirements re: Articulate at this link: http://www.articulate.com/support/presenter-13/system-requirements-for-arti=culate-studio-13

I use Windows 7 64-bit and installed Office 32-bit. My Articulate Studio 13 Pro installed successfully, and on opening PowerPoint, the Articulate add-in ribbon looks fine.

However, nothing happens when I selected the Record Narration in PowerPoint. This should activate the Voice Recording feature, but it
does not.

I reinstalled both Office and Articulate twice. However, the samehappens.

Kindly advise.

Hi Bernard and welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble - but thank you very much for providing those details.

First, if you haven't done so already, please try the steps outlined in the article that Leslie mentioned earlier.

If the problem continues, I would recommend trying a quick repair on Studio '13 to see if that helps:

How to Repair Articulate Studio '13

If the repair doesn't help, please try following the steps outlined in the following article:

Unexpected or Erratic Behavior in Articulate Studio '13

Let us know if you see any improvement.

Thanks!

Thanks;

I'm able to insert an audio clip as per the link you sent http://www.articulate.com/support/presenter-13/unable-to-record-narration, and so my PPT is functioning fine.

The issue remains as per my initial posting, where I wish to Record Narration/voice overs in Articulate, rather than merely inserting an audio clip per PPT slide.

Nothing happens when Record Narration is clicked in the Articulate ribbon. My wish is to seamlessly narrate while changing slides, rather than an audio clip per slide. Isn't this a feature of Articulate Studio, or am I now forced to use an additional software like Camtasia Studio for my video tutorials and presentations?

Hi Bernard,

Thanks for getting back to me!

That's great that you're able to insert an audio clip, but if the narration option still isn't functioning, we'll need to look closer at what may be causing the issue.

Are you able to try recording in a different presentation file? If so, does the same thing happen, or does it seem to be happening with just one project?

Are you able to test recording with your microphone outside of Articulate? If you have access to another program that supports voice recording, please test this out just to confirm your microphone and soundcard are functioning properly.

Also, yes - you can choose to either record narration for a single slide, or have the narration play across multiple slides.

1. Go to Options -> Other -> Recording -> "Record narration for one slide at a time."
2. Check this box to record narration for one slide; uncheck this box to record narration continuously across all slides in your presentation.

Let me know if you see any improvement, Bernard.

Thanks!

Thanks Guys, I know you're trying to help out.

However, this doesn't get activated in my PPT 32-bit installation. I also uploaded to support a screencast of the problem using the latest version SnagIt. I will attempt to install Articulate Studio on another laptop computer to see if it works, I hope my license allows this. But I've lost some valuable time over this.

Hi Bernard,

I was able to find the support case you mentioned (#00372506 for my reference). Looks like Tom requested some additional information and provided some troubleshooting steps. If you get a chance, please respond to the email sent by our support team and let them know if you're still having trouble with this.

If you do try to use the other machine, you should be fine activating as long as you're not exceeding two activations at one time. If it works on the other machine, please let me know.

I'll be sure to follow along with the progress of your support case as well and reach out to you here on the forums if I see any updates.

Thanks!

Christine; I have had the same problem since day one of using Studio 13. The record feature is entirely nonfunctional.

I have followed this thread, and checked all the details and found nothing that should prevent recording. If I didn't have Audacity and the ability to record externally, I'd have already uniinstalled 13.  So there is nothing wrong with the recording capabilty of my computer, or Windows.

I hate to sound peevish, but I have work to do and trouble-shooting my primary creative application isn't part of the plan. I'm beginning to think that you're selling a pre-release version and I am being used to "clear the minefield" of latent defects.

Additionally, annotations are broken. They don't appear when used, although they appear in Preview and Publish mode, but are useless since they can't be accurately placed or sized.. Again, I can use PPT to work around this, but it's just another PITA with 13.

I made some progress at last! There were two "Options" in PPT. I inadvertently attempted the options in the Articulate ribbon, with no result. I frankly gave up and decided to reinstall Articulate Studio on my 2nd laptop, again using PPT 2010.  As the Articulate ribbon was disabled, was directed to http://www.articulate.com/support/presenter-09/the-articulate-tab-on-the-powerpoint-ribbon-is-missing

I then realized that the "Options" that worked for me was not as highlighted above. Rather it was the the PPT, then File, then Options etc.as per this same link http://www.articulate.com/support/presenter-09/the-articulate-tab-on-the-powerpoint-ribbon-is-missing

All's well that ends well, but this really phased me, made worse by the one week plus to sort this out!  By the way, frankly speaking. You shouldn't really have customer fork out this much for a software, without them having direct phone support, unless they pay for additional customer support service. I look forward to a productive time with this program ... and hopefully then with some more positive comments.
