Hyperlink to open another Articulate 13 module on top of course

Apr 28, 2014

Hello,

I have created an interactive simulation using Articulate 13 and published to Web. I want to create a hyperlink in the course to open the Articulate simulation in another window that the student can view while taking a practice activity in the course. I have tried adding the simulation Presentation.html as a resource, but when I test the published course file link all I get is the frame of the web simulation swf and not the clickable areas of the simulation. I tried moving the published simulation for web into the external_files folder of the published course and that doesn't work. I recall that something similar could be done in Articulate 09, but it appears the structure is different and the same process does not work in Articulate 13. Is there another way that I can accomplish this?

Hi Dawn,

First, can you tell me how you're viewing the published presentation, please? Are you viewing the published output files locally, or are you uploading to a web server or LMS?

If you're viewing your published files locally, this may be the problem. If you view a published Studio '13 or '09 presentation on your local hard drive or send it to someone else to view on their local hard drive, you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail.

To properly test your published content and share it with others, upload it to the environment for which it was published. Please review the article below for more information:

Tips for Managing Project Files

  • I suggest using SCORM Cloud for your course - it's a great place to test SCORM content.
  • Another option would be to use our Tempshare server. Just keep in mind that this server is only available for testing content - it is not officially supported by Articulate and all content will be removed automatically after 10 days.
  • You're always welcome to try out Articulate Online, as well - it's available for a free 30 day trial.

Another option that may work for you is to upload the entire second course to your web server, then add the URL to the Resources tab as a hyperlink. This should launch the other course in a browser window.

Let us know how it goes!

Hi Christine,

The problem is not with viewing; my security settings allow me to see hyperlinked files when viewing locally. I published the course that contains the hyperlink to the Articulate 13 Web published course. I placed the Web published course files in the parent course's ...presentation_content/external_files folder. I can run the Web published course from any other location on my local drive and it works fine. It is only when I try to run it from within presentation_content\external_files folder that there is a problem--either from through the parent course hyperlink or just double-clicking on the Web course's presentation.html from Windows Explorer. What happens is that it will only run the shell of the SWF and not the content SWFs located in the presentation_content folder. Again, if I run the files in any other location other than within the parent course folder, it works fine.

I suspect it is because names of files need to be changed so they don't conflict with the parent course's runtime files. I recall that you had to change names in Articulate 09, but I can't find that article to show what needs to be changed, i.e. change presentation.html to index.html, etc. I am pretty sure that if I change the names for the Web files it will eliminate the conflict and work correctly. I just need to know what needs to change. Here is a picture of my folder setup to make the issue clearer.
