Moodle 2.0 and reading SCORM info - Can you do this?

Apr 09, 2011

Hello,

I am using Moodle 2.0 and Articulate Presenter and Quiz Maker to produce SCORM 1.2 packages.  When I look at the data from Moodle about a SCORM quiz, it's not in a format that is readily digestable.

For example, I was trying to review some quiz results and find out what answers they got wrong, but it was like trying decipher Chinese!

I have attached a screen shot for a quick look.

Is there a tool or plug in available to help with this?

Many thanks!

Dave

Hi Dave

I do get more data about tests if I go into the course and enter the scorm/aicc secton this gives me reports on each individual question by number and the answer they gave in text  I just cannot collate it into one big file, I am sure there is a moodle module that does this e.g.

Hey Phil,

I just realized that I didn't attach the file in the original post (now attached ).

The list you give above in the same data I have attached as a screen shot.

The screenshot is from a module of my course that has over 100 slides and a quiz at the end.  I need to find a way to make that data a more user friendly read.

The SCO's are set to track by quiz result.

I don't know where that gets us, but at least I can see what you show is what I show.

Cheers,

Dave

Hey Phil,

I just checked out the export on my Moodle site.  I can export each SCORM Quiz results which is good.  I wonder if there is a way to have my course set up (in Articultate and/or Moodle) to track the amount of slides viewed along with the quiz results.  I would like the ability to see how far along somebody is in the module if need be.

Brightcore looks real good, but they can p!ss off for that price!

I would also like the ability to view Survey questions (typed) in the proper format.

I don't know if I am asking too much here....but I don't think so!

Let me know what you think about Kineo.  I have posted in the Moodle forums about my 'problems'.

Cheers,

Dave

As a relational database techie / data analyst I can give you  a well educated guess of what the information means.

Basically it's telling you the name of the question. the number of actual correct responses, the amount of time on the quiz at that particular point in time, and the percentage  right and it's doing this for each question. You could import that information into Excel and graph it but based on what Phil is saying what you want is not yet available.

Moodle is cool but it's not up to Blackboard standards yet.

Hey JB,

Thanks for the input.  I would have thought that this type of situation would have been addressed already from Moodle.  They are missing a trick here.  If they are going to offer the use of SCORMs, they should at least make the data it harvests in a readily readable format that is able to be manipulated.

The search continues.......

Cheers,

Dave

Dave & Phil,

I have been toying around with this problem, too. The best solution I've found so far (that doesn't cost a fortune) is to do a bit-o-manual labor and have Excel pull out the results I need.

I made a template in Excel (attached) that allows me to look at only the students' answers on each slide (this could be easily customized to target the time spent viewing each slide or any other tracked item). Sheet 1 contains the "summary" report (just the answers). It is automatically filled out when the SCORM report is pasted into the first cell on subsequent sheets. To get it to paste nicely, I simply copy the full page of the SCORM report in Moodle and past it temporarily into a notepad file (to remove all formatting). I then immediately copy the unformatted text into the A1 of sheet 2.

It's clunky, but all my research shows that Moodle 2.0 isn't able to automate this process yet. If you've heard differently, I'd love to learn!

Hi Mark,

Welcome to the Heroes forum! - FYI Moodle also has a good SCORM forum here:
http://moodle.org/mod/forum/view.php?id=1951

I'm not sure what you mean by "automate the Quizmaker to Moodle 2 problem" - but the original post here from Dave asks for a better way to view the interactions data saved by Quizmaker.

as part of a GSOC project Moodle 2.2 has a new SCORM reporting back-end which includes a new Interactions report that displays the data in a much more readable manner and allows export to excel/csv etc.

This is relatively new so I don't think the user-level docs have been updated yet, but there's some good dev docs here with some screenshots (just ignore all the tech stuff there as this page is aimed at developers wanting to develop their own SCORM report plugins)

hope that answers your question!

Hello,

I was redirected here from my original thread:

https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/the-survey-results-on-moodle-lms#reply-274452

It has been 4 years, since the topic was started. Does anyone know about the way of obtaining from Moodle clear and readable data? I need access to data collected by means of the questionnaire prepared in Storyline2 and then transferred to Moodle LMS. I'd like to have it exported in Excel format.

Anyone knows solution?

Dan Marsden

have you taken a look at the links I provided above? - Moodle provides a number of reports out of the box that allow you to export interactions data. It may be important to mention that Moodle only provides complete support for SCORM 1.2 packages and if you have exported your packages as SCORM 1.3 the built-in reports may not export all the data you are looking for.

I have written a few custom patches in the past that allow the reports in Moodle to export SCORM 1.3 interactions data but haven't tested/used them for a while.

Hello Dan,

Thank you for your answer.

Yes, I looked at the links you provided above, although the first one goes to the forum, which - I'm sure - is a mine of knowledge, but also requires a lot of time to dig out proper information ;-) and second: does the plug-in work with latest releases of the Moodle software? If yes, how to install the plug-in?

If I understand you correctly, there is a chance, that if I generate (in Storyline2) the survey in the SCORM 1.2 standard, it should be easier to obtain legible report, which can be exported for further proceeding in Excel format, right? In fact I don't need very complicated form of report directly out of Moodle. Just poll with questions and answers, plus some text with trainees opinions about the course.
