Best Practices for Pipeline Efficiencies

Jan 21, 2015

Do you know if it is better to use, for example, seven different slides rather than using one slide with seven content rich layers?

My aim is to try to ensure that my lesson doesn't take forever to download and work.  In the environment my learners will be taking the lesson, the pipeline size will vary from very small to just okay. From what I understand, Storyline tries to download the first three slides before it starts to play and then it continues to download the remaining slides in the background.

If this information is true, does it make sense to use different slides at the beginning of a lesson to break up the content or does it make a difference?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Stephen

Thanks Ashley,

Unfortunately, those links do not answer my question. I'm more interested in how layers are downloaded to the learner and how using them might affect the users experence on a pipeline. If I had some technical information on how storyline treats layers and slides I could make a determination as to how I should treat them in different situations.

Thank you for your help,

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

I guess it'll depend on what's on your slides vs. layers then - I don't think there is a "one size fits all solution" but if you're concerned about overall loading time, then Storyline will preload your content as you mentioned:

  • Assets are loaded for the first slide (or the current slide when resuming), so the course can begin playing right away.
  • Assets are then loaded for the next three slides to prevent playback delays.
  • Assets are then loaded for the remainder of the course.

If it'll be particular asset heavy, I may break them into separate slides instead of using a number of layers per one slide.
