Captions for Publishing a Course to a Video File

Jan 31, 2018

Thank you for the new option to publish storyline course directly to video. This is very helpful.

Is there a way to export one caption file for all slides in the Storyline file? I see an export option for individual slides, but not the entire project.

Hi, everyone!

I have some great news to share. We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 73, we’ve included important fixes and new features!

One new feature we’ve included:

Boost video accessibility by including closed captions when publishing projects as MP4 video files.

To take advantage of this update, launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer, and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You'll find our step-by-step instructions here.

Please let me know if you need additional help!

I'd like the ability to export all of the course's captions in one file as a way to proofread, check spelling, typos, consistency, and so forth. If I'm missing the way to do this then I apologize, but this strikes me as a very basic feature that should have been included in Storyline long ago.

Just wanted to add to this comment thread. We frequently create software simulations with voice-over narration and publish as video files instead of SCORM packages. Our clients are usually in noisy settings, so they need the ability to watch the video with captions.

What we really need is a checkbox in the publish settings that can export all the captions as one VTT file when you publish to video. Exporting each VTT file separately is not an option because the timings are not correct for the entire resulting video.

Is there anything I need to do to put in a feature request for this?

+ 1 vote to the requirement described by Joshua 8 months ago.

As well as software simulation e-learning courses, we develop clinical system "How To" videos for quick reference by clinicians and other healthcare professionals in a hospital environment. Captions are therefore essential, especially in intensive wards and at night, and it is such a shame that Storyline has a neat captioning facility but lacks the ability to export all the captions as one VTT file when publishing to video.

Has this been added yet? I agree- the need to include captions when exporting to a video is extremely important.  I am currently using the free trial and testing accessibility.  I will be unable to approve the purchase of this program if there is not a way to include captions on the entire video.  How else are these presentations saved- when do the captions convert?

Hi there, Sara!

We're actively tracking requests to include closed captions for exported video files, so I'll share your post with my team. Here's a glimpse into how we manage feature ideas.

You're now subscribed to this discussion, so that means you'll get an email if we have an update on this feature! 😀

+1 for the feature request: exporting storyline as a video with captions

Also, video export seems to be extremely slow - Storyline just took approx 2 hours to export an approx 9 minute & 28MB video. Is there an issue with its rendering features, as usually such a video doesn't take hours to export/render?

The lack of captions for video output, ability to export the entire projects captions as a single file and the poor rendering quality of screen recordings have been known issues with Storyline for YEARS. Your otherwise amazing product becomes nearly unusable for many projects due to these ongoing and known shortcomings.

These three improvements alone would allow your company to render some of your competitors products useless and allow storyline to be THE goto tool for developers. It is discouraging to see the lack of focus on ADA compliance and captions with your product, and sad that something as mundane as even PowerPoint works better at these features.

The time saved using Storyline to develop quickly, soon fades when we have to redo our entire captions files or re-record screen recordings multiple times at many different screen resolutions and still get barely usable blurry screen recordings as a result.

Please consider these updates as necessary (as proven by the multiple posts on this forum) and not place them on a "nice to have in the future list".

Chiming in with a +1 for this request to include captions when publishing to video. We have many SMEs wishing to publish standalone videos for use on their website as informal learning objects/supplemental content, NOT as a SCORM-wrapped object for our LMS. The demand for this is only increasing, as more and more learning content is being re-evaluated and parsed into smaller chunks to view on-demand. It's really disappointing that this isn't on Articulate's development plan, especially since it's required for WCAG 2.1 Level A compliance.

This is an absolute MUST HAVE feature... for SL 360 to enable a publish to Video that INCLUDES the CC text. It's a big dismay that it is not a built-in feature and will cost us lots of time and money to ensure the course CC text is translated and available in a video format. Please PLEASE add this feature to SL 360 software. It is also a necessity in an accessibility-friendly world.
