Error loading story_content/data.xml: error...

Hi all,
I published a Storyline course and all works well. I selected "Include HTML5 output" to try that out, but when I attempt to view the output, my browser (Chrome) throws the following error: "The page at file://localhost/ says: Error loading story_content/data.xml: error".
Has anyone encountered this? If so, what could be causing this and are there any known workarounds or solutions?
Thanks,
Eric Rohrer

Hi, Christine Hendrickson,
Any update on your post from April 26th? Date of the next software update for Storyline with a possible fix?
Thanks for your attention.
Suzanne
Hi Christine... unfortunately that project I was working on was long ago (almost a year) and I haven't had (wanted) the chance to mess with it to see if the new update fixed the issue or not.
@Suzanne,
Welcome to the community!
We recently released Update 3 and we made quite a few improvements to performance for HTML5 content. If you're not running version 3 (1305.2012), please download and install the update using the link below:
Articulate - Storyline Update 3
Once you've finished installing the update, please republish and test your course. If the problem continues after installing the update, or if you already have Update 3 installed, please let me know.
@Eric,
I totally understand. I apologize for the wait. However, if you do run into any similar issues with the most recent update, please let me know.
I hope you both have a great day!
Thanks,
Christine
Hi, I just installed Update 3 and it seems like the error has not been resolved. I am still getting the "Error loading story_content/data.xml" error message when viewing the course in an iPad.. Any other workarounds I can do? Thanks in advance!
Hi Christine (nice name!), welcome to the community!
Just want to confirm - you've republished and re-uploaded the course after updating, correct?
Are you able to share the .STORY file here? I'd be happy to try uploading it and test it on my iPad.
Thanks!
Thanks Christine (just realized now that we have the same name, and yes it is a nice one! )! I republished and re-uploaded but got a negative result.
I republished and re-uploaded again and voila! It worked! Not sure, though, what caused the recurrence of the error the first time I used Update 3. It might just be a fluke.. Or my iPad. :)
Anyway, I'm just happy it is working now. Thanks again!!!
Hi Christine!
I have to admit, when I saw your first post I had to do a double-take :) Good to have another around the forums! :D
That's great! I wonder if it was simply a caching issue on the iPad/Safari, then.
Thanks so much for getting back to me and keeping me updated!
Have a great day,
Christine Hx2
I have the same problem. A student is trying to take a course of ours created and published in Storyline update 3. Upon launching it from our LMS they receive the following error:
Message from webpage
Error loading story_content/data.xml: error
The student having issues tried IE 10 and then Chrome for their browser. Other students have reported it is working just fine for them. It appears to be specific to this student's machine.
Is there something they need to update or change to fix this problem?
Thanks,
Jeff
Hi Jeff!
I agree, it sounds specific to the user's machine. Did they happen to view the course before it was published with Update 3?
If so, maybe it's a caching issue. Though, if they're seeing this in multiple browsers, I'm not sure if that's the case. If they haven't already, it would probably still be a good idea to have them clear their browser cache.
I'm not sure if you want to try this, but you could try publishing and uploading a copy of the course, so it's accessed from a different URL. See if they can load that version in their browser.
Thanks!
I have Update 3 installed and it made no difference. I even started a new project (now that I have Update 3), and then imported my slides from the project which was created with Update 2. This made no difference either.
I can confirm that it is not a based on file size. Our total file size is only 24MB, so the hypothesis that it is based on number of slides is more likely, as we have 66 slides. Unfortunately there is no way for us to reduce the number of slides, so this suggestion doesn't help.
What exactly is the data.xml file that it is looking for? What does it do and why is it being called? Is there a dummy data.xml file or something that we can insert into the story_content folder once the story file has been published files, in order to temporarily fix this issue until the next update is released?
Hi there Kuriko,
Where are you hosting the course(s)? What LMS or web server are you using and does it require authentication? If you're using a host that requires a login, that may be one key to the main problem.
Also, how are you publishing? Are you publishing for Flash, HTML5, etc.?
I don't know of any "dummy" file fix for this, and we really wouldn't support modifying the output files. It would really be best to get more information about the course or courses, where it's being hosted and how it's being viewed.
Thanks!
i had to republish several scorms with storyline 7, due to the issue caused by the IOS 9 Update,
For some strange reason, the same error occurs to me when i try to preview the player of a KOREAN localization (while not the other course languages localitazions). If I publish the course, i get a fatal error.
any idea?
Hi Zio,
As you'll see this thread is a bit older, pre- Storyline 2 even. Are you seeing the issues with Korean only in Update 7? I don't see any current issues with Korean localization in Storyline 2, so if you're seeing this after confirming the normal elements (working locally, importing into a new file, repairing Storyline) please connect with our Support team.
I see a lot of these posts are a few years old, but we're seeing this error message in IE now with a course we just launched. I've contacted our IT to see if they can add the %temp%\Articulate\ to our antivirus, and have asked our IT guy to reload our articulate software, but other than those resolutions are there any others to fix this? Of course this would be happening with an all company course (10,000 users) and it's becoming a nightmare.
thanks.
Michael
Hi Michael,
What version/update of Storyline are you using? What version of IE are your users accessing it in? I'd look to be on the latest updates of all if possible (Storyline 1, Update 10, Storyline 2 Update 7 and IE11).
I haven't seen a lot of similar threads, but hopefully someone in the community is able to chime in here to assist.
We are actually on the latest version of Storyline 2 but our company is only on IE 10 and won't be upgrading to 11 for a while.
Hi Michael,
I know a few of the previous users in this thread suggested it was specific to a users machine - I'm happy to test a link in IE11 and IE10 if you're able to share with me here.
i'm still with the problem when exporting from SL2 in Korean language. I'm working locally, I imported into a new file. When previewing the player i have this error showing in the preview little window
ERROR: Could not load the file 'story_content/data.xml'
and if i publish the course, SL2 crashes....
Hi, Zio -- I'm really sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing with your file! It's possible that it has become corrupt beyond recovery, however, there may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:
Hey Zio! I'm having the exact same problem with Korean. Did you ever find a cause/solution to this? I'd really appreciate any advice you can give.
Hi Dan!
Not sure if Zio is still subscribed to this thread, but you are welcome to utilize the 'Contact Me' option on his user profile if needed.
Just FYI, we have a user who just reported this error - our LMS is Cornerstone.
We have seen this in IE lately. When we turn the HTML5 off, it does play as expected.
Hi Michael!
We do not support the HTML5 output in IE.
Will and Michael - you can check out our viewing requirements in this documentation.
I would check the documentation but can't get to that link right now because it appears the site it down for the big announcement tomorrow. Unfortunately we can't always dictate the browsers people try to use to use our content. Are you saying that if someone tries to launch a storyline course in IE and they don't have Flash, and we have included HTML5 output, that the result is an ugly error message? (You think IE can't disappoint you any more than it has, but it never fails to find new ways)
