Issues having entire button be active for selection

May 10, 2013

This may be difficult to describe however I have a presentation where I use buttons with text inside and when I preview or publish, it's really finicky regarding where you need to click to activate the button.  Sometimes you need your cursor to be on the button but not on the text, yet for other buttons you need it to be on the text yet not on the other part of the button.  This is all on the same slide (yet different layers).  It makes it difficult for my end users as they will think that the button just doesn't work if they don't hit the exact "sweet-spot" so to speak.  I need the entire button to be active as a trigger.

Has anybody else had this issue and if so, how did you resolve it?

Hello Angela,

Here are some options:

1. Group the text box and button - this way, you can just add the trigger to the whole group so it shouldn't matter where the cursor is.

2. Instead of using a textbox to label the button, just double-click on the button itself and label it accordingly. Again, this way it will be treated as one object.

3. Another option (although not preferred) is put a hotspot over the button and text and add the trigger to the hotspot.

Hope this helps,

Donna

The way I did it was option #2 actually.  That's why I'm so confused that it's not working.   I'd rather not do the hotspot option if I don't have to.  Do you have any other suggestions?

What's odd is that it only happens on certain buttons and that sometimes you need to be on the text and for other buttons you need to NOT be on the text.

Hi Daniel,

I inserted the buttons on the Insert->Button option.  Now for many of them, I just copied and pasted the previous button each time.  Not sure if that makes a difference.  I have replicated the issue and attached the file below.  You'll notice that as of Level 2 button, there are certain areas of the button that you just cannot click on. It seems to get worse as you proceed onto different levels.

Thanks, Angela. The only one I had trouble with was button or level 4. I had to click on it a few times to get the lightbox effect/layer to open. Two things I would suggest:

1. Submit a case, so support can take a look. They are pretty quick about getting back to you. http://www.articulate.com/support/contact/submit.php

2. Instead of lightboxing, I would try using layers instead, if nothing else to see if that takes care of the problem. Please let me know what support says. I'm curious. Thank you for posting the sample file. --Daniel

Success!!!  Thanks to John from the Articulate Support team, my issue has been resolved.  Here's his response:

"If you switch the position of the button to be on top of the arrow on each of the slide layers, then the issue will not happen."

I am so appreciative for such an awesome support network for this authoring tool.  It was one of the MAJOR decision factors we chose it over other options!
