Marker errors

Apr 08, 2020

Hello everyone,

My colleagues and I create incompany e-learning modules for the building industry. We recently made the transfer from Storyline 2 to Articulate 360. While we are excited to try the new functions Articulate 360 has to offer, we are running into some errors with our favorite Storyline function: the markers. A lot of  markers are showing visual errors and are not functioning the way they used to (see images).

Beside these errors while "hovering" over the markers, we also noticed that sometimes the background color of the label becomes transparent, or that the size of the label has changed in the preview.

What we have tried:
- Replace markers in upgraded modules (errors still occur)
- Start a new module in 360, and ad some markers (same errors on 50% of the markers)

So our question is: does anybody know if this is a common error? And if so: has anybody found a solution to this problem?

We are looking forward to the reactions!

Hi Bas,

Thank you for reaching out!

While I am not aware of current issues around markers, I am happy to help dive in! Based on what you are experiencing, it might help to try a simple repair of Storyline. A simple repair usually fixes the problem, and you can find the steps on how to do this here:

Another point to consider is to be sure that projects are being worked on locally. Working on a network drive or an external USB drive can cause erratic behavior due to latency. We have a great resource that provides some tips to avoid unexpected behavior here:

If the above didn't help resolve the issue, please let us know! We are happy to help!

Hi Vincent,

Thank you for your reaction!

As the problem seems to occur on multiple computers, uninstalling and installing does not seem to be the solution. We are currently investigating when the marker errors occur. We wil make sure that we work from a local hard drive instead of our usual network drive. When this doesn't work (or when it does) I'll let you know.

Hello Vincent,

I suspect that the removal of Flash is the cause of the trouble we are experiencing with markers.
I found out that in the past (even 5 to 8 years ago) some other users of storyline had some trouble with markers, as soon as they had to rely on HTML5 instead of flash.

Examples from the past: example 1example 2

Do you have any update from your side?

With kind regards,

Hi Phil,

In the examples in the original post, the second image was within a zoom region. We learned not to use markers and zoom regions at the same time. But we continue to see markers fail when they are opened (outside of zoom regions). Sometimes on the first try, other times on the second or third try.

We just want our markers to open nicely, and display the information correctly, as exchanging them for callout forms with triggers and animations turns out to be a lot of work.

(This happens with files upgraded from SL2 to SL360 and newly created projects in SL360.)

Turns out, there was an update available (from the end of September 2020).
After installation, the marker animation was partly solved!
It only acts glitchy when I repeatedly try to open and close the marker. But most users won't be using the marker that way :P

The only remaining problem is the fact that text gets cut of at the bottom.
Some extra space solves this problem though.
