objects not resetting to initial state in pick many
Jun 30, 2012
Hi,
I'm trying to create a pick many question but am having the problem that after the learner has an incorrect attempt and returns to the base layer the buttons do not return to their initial state. I have set the revisiting tab in the slide properties to 'reset to initial state' on all layers and it does reset if I go to a different slide and then return but not when I return to the base layer. I have attached the slide I'm struggling with. Any suggestions would be very gratefully received as I need to use this format at several points in my story.
Thanks,
Rebekah

Very odd...
I would have expected this to work, but I see what you mean.
It DOES reset to initial state when revisiting, (i.e. if you go to the next slide, and then go back as you say, so that is doing what it "says on the tin"), but I would have expected it to reset the STATE of the buttons to Normal from the Selected State.
I tried to set up "Set State of Button A/B/C/D/E to Normal when User clicks Try Again", but cannot yet figure it out...
There's probably something completely obvious we are both missing here!
Bruce
Thanks for your input Bruce and in some ways I'm glad it's not just me being stupid, although an easy solution would be good . I could set it up so the incorrect answers go to another slide to overcome the problem but that would be a pain.
Hi Rebekah,
This is either a bug or perhaps this type of question was designed to function this way so the learners can see their incorrect choices (and not make the same mistake twice?). I did notice that the user can just click on any answer to deselect it, so they are able to change their answers easily and resubmit.
If you want something that works now, the Multiple Response question type resets all the answers automatically if you get it wrong. Of course you lose your ability to format the buttons - but it works just like the Pick Many.
Hope this helps!
Jill
Thanks so much Jill. I did realise that they could deselect to change their answers but I still think it should reset automatically.
Using multiple response will work for some of my questions (a few will need particular shapes as choices) so that's a great option which I hadn't considered.
I just tried using a multiple response and found that it doesn't reset either. Seems like there is definitely a problem with that function.
Hi Rebekah
What about setting the trigger on the Try Again button to Jump to Slide and then selecting that slide (kind of like it goes around in a loop).
Blair
Blair, you're a genius! I had tried using a trigger to overcome the problem but hadn't been able to make it work. Your solution is perfect.
The community here is just THE BEST. Once I get a bit more experienced with Storyline I'll try to return the help I've been so generously given.
Fantastic workaround!
Oh Blair, you're a genius! I was just scratching my head about how to do that exact thing! THanks man!!!
The reason that works (I would think) is that the user has to leave the slide for it be deemed "revisiting". A jump to would mean they are leaving the slide only to be redirected to it. Sorry if I just stated the obvious, just thought I'd put it in words.
Good workaround Blair! Thank you!!
Happy people here! Good to see
Hi Michelle and Kiran! Glad this post helped you out and just let us know if you need anything further.
One more related question, what if I don't want my audio to repeat when I return?
Hi Doug! You should be able to accomplish this and there are a couple of different ways. Can you check out this thread here and see if it assists you with what you are trying to do?
Hi all
I'm experiencing a very similar problem and used the Jump to trigger to reset to the initial state. However I was only allowing the users 3 attempts to answer the question. Doing it this way now puts them in a loop as it resets the number of attempts back to 1.
Any other ideas as to how to overcome this problem?
I'd appreciate the help.
Thanks,
Shelley
Hi Shelley,
Where are you adjusting the variable? You may want to adjust it on a layer or a blank slide that the user would be brought to prior to revisiting this slide. You could set that additional slide to "adjust variable when timeline starts" and then "jump to slide the slide you'd like to replay" when the timeline starts to allow it to bypass very quickly. You'll want to make sure that the variable trigger occurs before the jump to slide trigger to allow everything to fire as expected.
Becky has a tutorial here on resetting a drag and drop, with a limited number of attempts - you'll want to use a similar method for your question as well.
Thanks very much Ashley - that works now!
Happy to hear it Shelley!
Hi Nicole! Glad you were able to find some resolution in this thread, but I did want to pop in and welcome you to E-Learning Heroes!
When I try that the current question is not listed in my options. Is there a way to force it back to the current slide?
Hi Mark,
This thread is a bit older, and I'm not sure that Blair is still subscribed - but if you're having difficulty adding this trigger please first confirm that you're working on local project files as described here.
Ah yes, reset state does not kick in when switching layers! Had I know that. Great tip, it means that I should always jump to this slide rather than hide layer if I want the state to reset when visited.
Glad this thread helped you out Soren - and correct, using it on a layer won't reset it - so you could also always look at using it with a blank slide and jump to that one and back again to allow it to reset.
