Packaging SCORM FILES - best practices & include manifest file?

Nov 06, 2015

1) What is the manifest file? And how do I include this in my packaged SCORM file? What is the full process to include everything?

2) Also, what is your recommendation (best practice) for testing SCORM files before they are loaded to the LMS?  I know there are products on the internet available but I thought I would ask you since this is something you work with day in and day out and working with SCORM files is a little new to me.  In the past, we had one LMS admin who would load them…with our new LMS, all LMS admins will load their own so I am trying to expand my understanding.  Other best practices around SCORM files, etc. would be appreciated if you have the time.

Thank you for your help. It's always appreciated.

Hi, Katie -- Thanks for your question and welcome to the community!

Your imsmanifest is an XML document that will be included in your output folder after you publish your file, so there is nothing special you will need to do to add it other than publish. Please see the following information on Preview and Publishing a Course, as well as this tutorial on Publishing for LMS. And it is always a good practice to test your published output on the SCORM Cloud before loading into the LMS, as this environment is the industry standard for LMS testing. You may find this article, How to Troubleshoot Your LMS with SCORM Cloud, to be of interest, as well.

Hi Christie,

I reviewed the documents but it doesn't have the information I am looking for.

When I click publish it's not exporting all the files that I need in the file. Please view my 2 images. One is published by a different source and one was published by me. My files are missing a few exports. How do I export and make sure I have all files necessary. Do I need to set my settings up differently to get all of these files included? My file doesn't not have the manifestxml file.

Hi, Katie -- I appreciate the screenshot, but it would be really great if you were able to provide your file so that I can take a look at your current publish settings, etc. to see if I have the same result. Please use the ADD ATTACHMENT button in the bottom left of the reply box to share your file and I'll be in touch as soon as possible with my findings.

Hi, Katie -- It looks like your project was set to publish for Web rather than LMS. Once I switched to the LMS tab, and ran a publish, when I opened your published output folder, you can now see the imsmanifest XML document (so it would be included when you zip your published output folder and load it onto your LMS). Does that answer your question?
