Problem: Submit button in Quiz Appears to Turn Off Audio on Base Layer

Apr 18, 2017

I've come across an issue in Articulate Storyline for which I haven't yet found a solution and I'm wondering if it's a bug:

I have a Quiz slide in which there is audio on the Base layer. If the learner chooses to not answer the question but clicks immediately on the Submit button WHILE the audio is playing, the Default caption box appears that says: "You Must Complete the Question Before Submitting" along with an OK button.  When the learner clicks the OK button, they are returned to the base slide but the Audio no longer plays. Even if you refresh, the audio doesn't play. (Note: the Base Layer is already set to 'Reset to Initial State' when revisiting.) I have tried setting variables to continue playing the audio, but without success.  Is there a solution?

Hi there Curt,

Thanks for letting us know what you're seeing. We do have an issue on our radar for Storyline 360 where audio does not resume after clicking 'OK' on a feedback layer when you hit 'Submit' before selecting an answer, and it sounds like that matches what's happening in your file. I'll be sure to add your experience to the report and send you an update as soon as I have more information.

It does appear to be an issue that only happens in the HTML5 output, so if you were to publish using the Flash option, the audio should resume if the learner hits submit before selecting an answer.

If you need to include the HTML5 output, another workaround would be to disable the 'Submit' button when timeline starts. Then you can add another trigger to change the state of the 'Submit' button back to Normal if the state of any of the radio buttons is selected. That way users will not be able to click the 'Submit' button without selecting an answer first.

Thanks, Alyssa. I/we considered the trigger option to disable the Submit button until the Timeline ends but the added development would take too much effort to build across our full range of modules. So, for the time being, we'll probably wait until the issue is addressed in the software. I didn't realize that this problem only happens in HTML5 as we are only in the review stage where we are publishing to Articulate Review, and in that environment, this issue happens. Again, thanks for the input and I look forward to seeing the problem resolved in a later release.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for weighing in on this issue - It's reported to our team and we'll keep you posted here once we have any updates on it.

I did want to clarify that this happens within the HTML5 output and when the user clicks the submit button without choosing an answer. At that point they'll see the "Please select an answer pop up".
