Random failure to mark complete

Oct 28, 2015

Every once in a while we run into a problem where a course will not mark complete for a few people, although it does mark complete for the majority of the folks who take it. This causes endless frustration as we try to troubleshoot but frequently find that we are unable to replicate the problem. We usually end up taking the user's word that they passed the course, and marking it complete manually.

I am inclined to think that it might be the users' computers causing the problem, as that seems to be the only element that isn't common to everyone taking the course. We have a standard corporate build for all computers, but maybe something doesn't get properly installed when a computer is issued to a user.

Has anyone else run into this problem... maybe even found a cause or solution?

Yes! I have this problem as well and it is very frustrating. Most people can complete a course with no problem, but sometimes it just won't mark as complete. When it happens seems totally random to me. I have never been able to duplicate the problem, and I can't find ANY commonality in the situations when this happens... not the computer or the site or the course or even the specific user. A user might have Course A complete but not course B, while a different user might have Course B complete but not Course A, all from the same computer. Switching to a different computer may or may not help.

I end up manually marking courses as complete when this happens if the affected user can provide a screen shot of the completion screen from the course, or based on the word of their supervisor. This is a big headache for me when I push out a mandatory course assignment to 500 people and then suddenly 20 or 30 of them won't mark as complete.

I am not sure if the problem is with Storyline or the LMS. We use SuccessFactors for our LMS.

Hi, Julie and Monique -- Thanks for your input and there are a few things you may want to try. First, here is our System Requirements sheet, as that may be helpful to determine if the learner's machine on which they are taking courses is contributing to the error they are encountering.

Also, if you are publishing for LMS, have you tested your published output in the SCORM Cloud, as that is the industry standard for LMS testing? You may find this article on How to Troubleshoot Your LMS with SCORM Cloud to be of some value, and if you do not experience the error within SCORM Cloud, it may be a good idea to reach out to your LMS provider directly.
