Resume feature doesn't work while exit from question bank

Oct 19, 2016

I have a Storyline course containing quiz at the end. I have created the quiz using question-bank, where 30 question are randomly drawn from 50 in each attempt. I have uploaded the course on SCORM cloud and moodle. When I exit the course from halfway, while relaunch, it shows the resume prompt, asking "you want to resume or not". It re-directs me to the correct page as well. But if I exit the course, while taking the quiz (Randomised question bank), and then if I relaunch. It shows the resume prompt, but not redirecting me to the correct page. Please suggest.

Hi Sayali!

If a learner exits the course while a feedback layer is displaying for a question slide, the question will reset to its initial state when the learner resumes the course later. This is a known issue. You can avoid this behavior using either of the following methods:

* Create a custom feedback slide and configure the Submit trigger to jump to the feedback slide
* Configure the feedback layer to jump to a blank slide when the timeline of the layer starts, and configure the blank slide to jump to the previous slide (i.e., the question slide) when the timeline of the slide starts.

Hello, Sayali!  Leslie provided some good information, and I also wanted to offer this idea as well:

It is possible that you could be exceeding the suspend data limit in your LMS, effectively making it difficult to resume at the same place in the quiz.  This discussion also addresses this issue.

You can test that theory out by reducing the number of questions in a "test" version of your course and see if it improves the resume function.  The workarounds in the above article regarding the suspend data limit include:

  • Disable the resume feature in Storyline.
  • Reduce the number of slides until the resume feature works as expected. The limit will vary, depending on a variety of factors. You'll need to test your content in your LMS to verify.
  • Republish your course for SCORM 2004 3rd Edition or 4th Edition, both of which support much longer suspend data.

I hope that helps to address the issue!  If not, let us know how we can help.  You can always share your .story file here for us to do some testing as well.

I have a very large module that is not responding well to resume when the user exits the course.  It takes the user not to the same slide but to the beginning of the scene. Also, when a user answers a quiz question and then clicks BACK to a previous slide and then again FORWARD, the quiz question is locking up. Not allowing a new response (because the setting is for only one response) but also NOT allowing the user to advance. The feedback slide with CONTINUE is not displaying, so the user is stuck.  Since it won't resume to the actual place left off, and it won't let the user advance past the already answered quiz slide, there is no way to finish the module. I have designed quite a few Storyline modules and not run into this. Please help! The LMS the customer is using is Cornerstone.

Hi Lonna,

Sorry to hear you've run into these issues. Are you seeing this behavior when viewing the file within the LMS, or are you also seeing it when viewing the file locally in Preview mode?

If you're seeing this behavior within the LMS, I would recommend troubleshooting using SCORM Cloud to nail down whether it's an LMS specific issue or a file specific one. If you're able to reproduce this in SCORM Cloud, you're welcome to share your project file here so we can do some testing.

Hi Lonna!

Did you check out the information that Crystal shared above regarding the suspend data limit? Sounds like that may be what you are encountering.

As far as the navigation in your quiz:

By default, question slides in Articulate Storyline have a Submit button, meaning each question will be submitted one at a time for evaluation and feedback will be displayed immediately. If you want all the questions to be submitted at the same time at the end of the quiz, change the navigation controls from Submit buttons to Prev/Next buttons. Here's how.

Hello Sayali,

Popping in to share that we no longer see the issue with the suspend_data not being sent to the LMS with the submit interaction trigger when using the latest update of Storyline 360, Build 3.61.27106.0.

If you run into another issue using the latest update of Storyline 360, please reach out to our support team directly here.
