SL2 Right-Click Trigger Fails
Jan 15, 2015
Hello. While this issue has been reported over two years ago, I have not been able to find a fix or workaround for this problem. The right-click trigger is broken in some cases. For example, if you use a right-click trigger to show a layer on a slide, it fails for me consistently. I have uploaded a test file to Tempshare here:
Slide two is setup to show a layer on right clicking the circle. Please help test this and post your results. I believe this to be a bug and want it finally addressed. PS. Right-click functionality also fails to work in some browsers when run locally. It was reported that running on an LMS or webserver will enable right-click functionality to work, however, it still fails for me. Given that this issue is over two years old now, I would really like this addressed and a permanent solution achieved.

HI April,
Thanks for reaching out here. I know the right click functionality was something that was fixed in Update 7 of Storyline 2 - but it seems that it's behaving differently for you on a hotspot question? Have you tried not using the standard hotspot question type but one of the other freeform ones and adding the trigger based on the user right clicking? If you'd like to share a copy of your .story file here we're also happy to take a look at the behavior.
OK, I'm going to add a new wrinkle...I'm on SL2 Update 7. I created a story with simulation that has a right-click. Publishing this story to an LMS works fine...
...until someone uses a browser with Flash disabled and is relying on HTML5. Then the right-click doesn't work.
Hi Robert,
Thanks for reaching out here - are you viewing the content within one of the supported HTML5 browsers? I would want to confirm that element first, as I know the documented fix was noted for Flash output here but I hadn't seen indication that it didn't work in HTML5. Also, it's worth noting the fix mentioned only was associated with the base layer, the right click option still does not work on the slide layers.
Hi Ashley!
Thanks for your quick response.
Yes, I am using the latest versions of Safari and Google on Mac, and the latest versions of IE, Chrome, and Firefox on PC. I’m merely turning off the Flash plug-in.
Also, the software simulation that has the right-click is on the base layer.
Thanks Robert for sharing that info - I think we'd want to take a look at your .story file to confirm how it's set up and then do some testing. Are you able to share with our team here?

Hi - I now have a file where right click triggers don't work on layers (only works on base layer). I updated to v.10 just in case, but no change.
Has this functionality always only worked on the base layer?
Sorry - forgot to mention this is in preview so far (I haven't tested in published output yet).
Hi Michael,
There was an issue resolved earlier where the right click trigger didn't work at all, and the fix our team put in place resolved it only for the base layer. They are still looking at ways to ensure it works on slide layers but in the meantime the base layer is the only spot we'd expect it to work.
Hi, having read this issue was first reported over 2 years ago, I was wondering if any work has been done on this yet?
I can't get a slide to jump to the next one when you have to right click an object in a layer...
Hi Pieter!
As you can see from Ashley's response above, there was some work done with regards to the base layer, but not the actual slide layers.
Heads up. I hate to reopen this wound, but I just encountered the same problem with a right-click trigger on a layer failing.
It did work for me from a base layer when playing it from our test server in Firefox, IE, and Chrome, however, so I am republishing with this workaround in place. <fingers crossed>
I'm on SL2 update 11: 1609.3020.
We just moved to a new LMS Jan 1st, so that's a twist too - just to keep things interesting.
Thanks, Chris, for sharing your experience. We were able to fix the right-click trigger for the base layer, but the issue with that trigger on slide layers is still open with our QA team. Now that you've contributed to this discussion, you'll receive notifications when we post updates here.
Good luck with the new LMS!
This thread goes back three years and I am not able to use Right Click trigger on layers. I know SL3 is out, I have a license but have not tested to see if this bug was fixed. My problem is I am a contractor and many of my clients are still using SL2. We are up to Update 12 and this still has not been fixed?
Hi Phillip,
You can use a right click trigger on the base slide layer, not the individual layers. The behavior is still consistent with Storyline 3.
If you're working with clients who use Storyline 2, also keep in mind that content created in Storyline 3 won't be backwards compatible to open in Storyline 2. You'd only be able to share the published output with those clients (using Storyline 2) to allow them to view in a browser per normal.
Ashley,
Thanks for your prompt response. I just tested this in SL3 and the right click trigger now works on slide layers as well as the base layer.
I would imagine there will be no more updates for SL2, even thou this is indeed a bug fix and not a request for new feature.
Another reason to upgrade.
Phil
Hi Phil,
Thanks for testing that - I also tested it, and you're right it does work on the slide layer now. We still had an open issue for it, so I'll follow up with my team to get that closed out. Thanks for sharing!
As for Storyline 2 updates, we don't have any planned but it's still supported. So we're always keeping an eye on issues and how they may impact customers and working within Storyline 2.
If you have any questions about upgrading, please feel free to reach out to our Sales team here.
Thanks. No need to upgrade, I'm running both versions. If SL2 is still supported, maybe we'll see an update soon with this bug fix since they already have it figured out and applied to SL3.
We'll certainly keep you posted here Phillip if that occurs. Thanks for reaching out.
@Articulate team:
We like articulate very much, and we prefer it over Captivate. We started experimenting with doing software simulations (screen recordings) using articulate. However, I came across this blocker, regarding right-click on a hotspot.
Is it going to be addressed? Can I file a critical issue? If yes, where?
We deploy content into our own webcontainer, using html5 (not flash). When I publish to Articulate 360, all works well. When I publish to Web (local dir) it is not working (nor locally, nor in the webcontainer).
I hope this can be addressed, otherwise, we are forced to use captivate.
Thanks!
Miki
p.s. Funny enough, in captivate is the other way around. When previewing you need to use Click, but when publishing, it is the correct behavior: right-click. :)
Hi Miki,
Could you let me know what is happening with your right click in Storyline 360? We've seen a recent issue where a right click in HTML5 output will show the browser context menu but the click actually does work, just with that little pop up in front.
We do have this reported to our team and as soon as we have any additional information to share we'll let you know here!
If you're running into something else, could you share a bit more about the issue and a sample .story file?
Great news, Miki!
To follow up on Ashley's post – I’m really excited to let you know that we just released another update for Articulate 360, and you can check out the new features and fixes in the release notes!
One of the fixes addresses an issue in Storyline 360/HTML5 output where right clicking on a hotspot that was designed to jump to the next slide would just show the context menu.
Here’s how you can update Storyline 360 to take advantage of everything the latest release has to offer. Let us know how you make out!
If these fixes do indeed correct the problem of using a right-click trigger
on a layer, as the base layer works fine, will they be pushed for perpetual
Storyline 3 licenses?
Phil
What I meant to say in another post is if these fixes do indeed fix the problem with a right-click trigger on the slide layer, will they be pushed for Storyline 2?
