Splicing Up A Video--Which Is Better?

Jun 06, 2012

I have a single WMV movie file that needs to play on one slide. And I want to split the video up into 7 segments.

Is it better to use a third-party tool and chop the video up into 7 smaller individual videos for importing into Storyline --- or --- just import the whole video as is into Storyline and then copy it on the timeline six times (putting each in a different position) and for each copy (and the original) trim the videos with Storyline itself?

Or doesn't it matter at all?

I did the latter with Storyline itself and it worked great--very easy to do.  But thought I just ask for curiosity sake.

Hi Gerry,

Interesting question... I'd have probably tried the harder and more difficult option first because I can be obtuse sometimes, then do the simpler imporrt-video-drag-timeline-to-selected-length-of-time-size somewhat by accident, just to realize that I blew off an hour instead of doing it much more easily easily with Storyline in three minutes...

Good to know, though!  Thanks.

Love it.    Working at home most of the time is a sheer joy.  Well, except, for the cat demanding attention and an occasional honey-do project.

Got enough small Storyline/Presenter projects to keep me slightly busy and give me some chump change.  One of the forum folks here contacted me last weekend for some Storyline help but I was unable due to some urgent family care issues.

The lull may change shortly with the potential of more work coming shortly.  Got two Storyline presos coming up to give to local folks, one in June and then one in July to an ASTD SIG.

Got something that David Anderson asked me to consider doing a while back but I've been a bit afraid of that one.  ;)

The firm I work through now asked me today about learning SmartBuilder.  Not sure about that.

The way I'm reading this is that there's no tool to actually just splice one video into many parts native to Storyline. (The video edit functionality seems limited.) Is that correct?

The only way to do it is to chop in an editing program (which makes it hard to adjust later on) or to trim the same track over and over, add it multiple times, and try to make it playback smoothly? (Also hard to edit?)

Ideally, there'd be a way to do in video quizzing simply, rather than workarounds. I don't supposed anyone knows if that is coming down the pipeline?

Hi Allison,

Correct - Storyline doesn't have a robust video editing tool, just some basic such as cropping the beginning or end of a video clip. You can see all the information here about editing a video in Storyline, and hopefully others will weigh in on what tools or resources they use to edit outside of Storyline.
