Using custom built forward and back buttons on iPad and android tablets

Sep 01, 2015

We have created several modules of eLearning which act as refreshers to a fully blended course.  Each of the 14 modules has been translated into 13 languages.  Our interface design removes all player controls like back and previous, replacing them with our inbuilt forward and back buttons on the each individual slide.  This allows us to switch them on or off when we wish to force the user to complete certain interactions or explorations.

We now have a need to support these modules (and potentially others) launched via iPad or android tablets.  we wish to track start and complete via our LMS which does not support xAPI (Tin Can API) and so we do not want to launch the modules via Articulate Mobile Player.

When we launch the modules as HTML5 on a tablet or touch screen device, the interactions on the screens work fine.  We can click buttons to launch layers, markers or to launch new screens. However, the next and back buttons we have created do not work consistently (i.e. they will work when you stab at them with your finger several times,  but not straight away.)

Has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it.  as you can imagine with 182 modules out there, I have no desire to reinstate the player controls for back and next and amend the on-screen instructions accordingly.

The attachment shows a blow up of the relevant area of the screen with the button highlighted.

Thanks

Hi Andrew,

I think we'd want to take a look at one of these courses to see how you've set up the next/previous buttons and before you send a long there are a few things you'll want to check into:

What update of Storyline are you publishing with? I'd look at using the latest update, Storyline 2 Update 6.

Check that you're viewing the published output within one of the supported browsers/devices detailed here.   If it's just the iPad/Android tablets you've tested so far what about in Chrome on your desktop with Flash disabled?

Test it outside of your LMS in a site such as SCORM Cloud for example, as it's an industry standard for testing LMS content.

If you've checked into all those items and are still having issues can you share a copy of a .story file here with us?
