Videos not playing in published course. HELP!!

Nov 25, 2013

I am working on a course with lots of videos. Originally they were really blurry and so I've been having to use the work around I learned here. //www.screenr.com/NTHH

I published the course last week and the work around worked fine. Today I realized that some of the videos were not blurry because of SL, but because of the video themselves. Fixed the videos. Republished. Renamed the video files so I could replace them in the output file. Replaced them just like i did before.

Now when I open the output file (both web and LMS output) the videos do not play. They show up in preview mode, but not in the published version , HELP!!!

Hi Kim,

Sorry that was unclear! Hopefully this will help.

Prior to the fix we implemented in Storyline, if your project had a video on the first slide, the video would not play automatically. This is because Chrome wants the learner to interact with the slide or "click" before media can play.

Because Chrome requires this "click", our fix was to add a play button that learners will see when they launch or resume a course with a video on the first slide. Clicking the play button starts the course and allows the video to play automatically.

Chrome also remembers every domain you visit and will track if you've accepted media to play a certain number of times. This means that eventually, videos on a particular domain will play automatically without need for the play button.

Thanks for your response Alyssa. I'm not sure what you mean by "will work as expected in Google". I understand the concept behind what they've done to stop videos auto-playing - but if the Articulate fix is to add a play button that looks like the one above, I think I'll be opting for instructions not to play this in Chrome rather than have learners see this play button, or not have videos at the start of any projects.

I agree with other comments here that this issue exists because of Google changing how Chrome deals with media - I've skimmed through the link you put up Will - there's a lot of people not happy about this, but I'm not sure that things will change from their end.

Hi Dianne,

I believe Alyssa was sharing that the "will work as expected in Google" means that courses you've published with the latest update will follow what you're seeing with the courses modified using the Updater tool.

Since Google has required that a user interact with a site before it starts autoplaying media, that play button is what your learners will see at the start of the course. After a while, learners may stop seeing the play button as Chrome's Media Engagement Index (MEI) learns that they allowed audio to play on previous visits to the same site. When that happens, audio will automatically play as it did in earlier versions of Chrome.

Keep in mind, browsers like Safari have also started to implement similar policies and I expect other browsers to soon follow suit.

I am experiencing the same issue of videos not playing back in Chrome. Thank you SO much for your work around because nothing else worked. Launching the course in IE removed all animation for the course so that didn't work but adding a button at the very beginning of the course where the user had to click worked like a charm! Thank you Will Findlay!

I had today encoding issue with video after publish. I was checked folder story_content and I was wonder why I haven't got any video in location. After 2 hours I was turn off antyvirus and problem gone. Was some issues with encoding and saving video/audio files. Right now I can publish courses with all content.

Best,

Simon

Good morning, Heather!

I'm happy to help look into why your videos are not playing in the published output. A few clarifying questions:

  • Is this happening in any browser or just Internet Explorer?
  • Is the course hosted on a web server or a learning management system?
  • How were the videos imported into Storyline (From a file, website, Web Object)?

Lastly, are you comfortable with sharing the .story file? I'd like to test it in a similar environment and will delete it after troubleshooting. You can share it privately through this secure link.

I am having the same video issues as described above.

Some video will play and others will not play. This is happening in both IE and Chrome. I have tried many of the suggestions above including the addition of a play button, redownloading the video/clip from youtube and re-uploading. I am using storyline 3. Are you able to help please? I am happy to share content if that helps. Thanks

Hi,

I am also having this issue. Certain videos, mostly larger and longer videos, will not play in SCORM packages on our LMS. Unfortunately, it also applies to previous courses with videos that were working fine until a week or so ago. I've tried three browsers, and all of the suggestions in this thread with no success.

Can anyone shed any light on these recent changes? Has to be browser related, surely?

Thanks,

Tristan

Hi Tristan,

So sorry to hear about the video trouble. I'm happy to help find a fix!

Tell me a bit more about the videos — were they added from a file, website, web object? Also, what version of Storyline are you using?

Feel free to also connect with our Support Engineers for fast help. They can test the content in SCORM Cloud, an industry-standard LMS testing tool, to see how the videos work there:

Hello Anna!

We're happy to help! Would you mind sharing more details as to exactly what you're running into? Is it specifically an issue with autoplay in Chrome? If so, is the course on a Learning Management System or website?

If you can share a screen recording of the issue, that would help us get started!
