What is this grey screen with a white dot?

Oct 02, 2019

I am getting a grey screen with a white dot when loading my project. This is the published output version. Happens both when opening the html5 file directly as well as when hosting it on our server. It's the very first thing that pops up. Strangely, when you click the white dot, the project appears. Only seems to happen with chrome. Photo attached.

Hi Adam,

Looks like the normal Chrome play button (although it's somehow missing its Play icon?).  This tends to appear if you have audio/video start automatically in your project.  I've gotten around this by starting with a still version of my slide and adding a "Start" button in the middle of it that links to the second slide (the one with audio/video).  This way it doesn't look like a slide switch, because they look exactly the same.

Hi there, Adam. Thanks for that screenshot!

Holley's spot-on. There was a change in the way that Chrome handles media autoplay. The play button you're seeing on the first slide is expected. When you click that button, the media should play normally throughout the course.

After a while, learners may stop seeing that button as Chrome's Media Engagement Index (MEI) learns that they allowed media to play on previous visits to the same site. When that happens, media will automatically play as it did in earlier versions of Chrome.

For more information on this, check out the update Justin shared here!

When you say 'media', do you mean Storyline? Because I have no video in the project. I do have audio, but no video. Also, it doesn't appear to me to be a 'play' button. It's just a white dot on a grey screen. It's very confusing, and honestly I've never seen it before with any other media played in Chrome. Just Storyline. I can understand that you'd want to spin this and point the finger at Google, but I've not seen this with anything else before, and it comes across as our project not working properly.

Hi, I too faced this issue [white dot instead of the PLAY button on Chrome]. Its a Storyline PLAYER issue as mentioned earlier.

I just exported the player settings [XML file] of another project where it looked correct and imported into this one that I was facing an issue with. All works well now. The colors of the PLAY button/seekbar etc. were merging into the background color and hence invisible although they were present.

Hope that helps someone who might have a similar issue in future.
