Content Security

Feb 17, 2012

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has ever had the need to provide additional security for your elearning content - such as not allowing screen grabs?  I am working with a team with  some confidential data included in their lesson.  We can limit who is viewing but  they would also like to limit what those viewing can do with the content such as not allowing the user to grab any screen shots.  Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Perhaps you could host the course on a bootable CD and have the boot severely limit the users controls.  But I have no experience doing so (or really know if it's possible).

That said, I have dealt with clients concerns about preventing screen shots, but really it came down to whether they trust their employees or not.  And, if they don't, why are they still employees.  I realize that it doesn't answer your issue - but maybe it provides an alternative avenue for them to consider?

Here's a link with some suggestions: http://community.articulate.com/forums/p/9242/54047.aspx#54047

When I used to sell training cds, I would monitor various "sites" to see if my cds were being pirated. At first, I was happy because only Lynda.com, Total Training, VTC and other big names were available. Then it occurred to me: my stuff isn't popular enough to be bootlegged! Bummer. The day my stuff started showing up in bit torrent feeds was... Well, it was the happiest day ever

It's one thing to grab individual .swf files, but to recreate the course from browser cache is a lot of work. I really wouldn't worry about it.

Apple Lion included some updates to iTunes that prevents users from screengrabbing iTunes when it's playing a dvd movie. Of course, you can open the movie in VLC player and screen shot apps work so there's always a work around.

Maybe you could look into creating a custom player that locks out screencapture capabilities?
