motion path: from where ever to target

Aug 07, 2017

I want to be able to create a motion path that will move an object from anywhere on screen to a target location.

The object might be anywhere because I want the motion path to be active after the user has dropped the object - anywhere. Once dropped, I want the object to move to where the user should have dropped it. And I don't want this to occur within the context of a standard D&D interaction.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hey Alex,

Sounds interesting but I'm not quite sure if this would be possible using Storyline's default functionalities. You would have to create a motion path for each possible way the object can be dropped, I think... Do you have an example of a similar type of interaction that illustrates what you're trying to create? That might help...

I think it might be achievable but it would be highly complex. You would need an invisible grid of drop targets controlling a horizontal and a vertical variable.  You would need 4 motion paths of equal length and with relative starting points (up,  down,  left,  right). The length should be equal to the distance from 1 middle to the next.

On object drop,  do some math to determine horizontal and vertical distance from the target then run each of the required animations the required number of times.

Make sense? I've probably missed some requirements but I'm brainstorming here without StoryLine open.

Here's a scenario:

1. Four drop targets onscreen. One of them represents the correct response.
2. One drag object.
3. No matter where the drag object is dropped, I would like to animate it moving into the drop target that represents the correct answer. In the scenario here, at least 3 different motion paths are required. For the interaction I have in mind, it would be more complex, because there would be more drag objects.

Here's how this would be done:

1. X- and Y- coordinates for the beginning and end of the motion path are treated as variables.
2. X and Y values for object position are accessible to Storyline user. A trigger for this might say 'once object A is dropped, get its coordinates.'
3. When an object is dropped, we get the values for the X and Y coordinates, and insert those into variables that are used to describe the start of the motion path. So, no matter where the object is dropped, the motion path adapts to its position.
