web-ex code

Jun 19, 2013

Trying to publish a Web-ex recorded training into a Learning Mangement System.  In order for it to be tracked correctly it would need to be in a scorm/aicc compliant package-i.e. Storyline not a problem, but web-ex files have some code in them that makes them open in their own window and disregard the storyline package reporting.  So storyline thinks nothing is happening and does not show any activity.  Any ideas how to make this work?

Some of this depends on your LMS system, of course.  But here's how I'm handling them.  I use WebEx's software to convert the .arf to a .wmv file.  Then, I use Articulate's Video Encoder program to convert the .wmv into a Flash file.  At this point, you no longer have to worry about the .wmv file trying to call Windows Media Player.

Now, if you've got a long webinar, you might have a problem.  I haven't worked in Storyline but in Studio, when you drop a Flash file onto a slide, the LMS system bookmarks the slide...not where your learner is in the video.  And, many learners will want to stop and start long videos.

Again, I haven't worked in Storyline.  But, I solved this problem by using Captivate.  I open a blank project, and add about 15 slides set to play for 5 minutes each.  Then I import the Flash file and set it to play for the duration of the project.  I edit the last slide to end about 1-2 seconds after the video.  When I publish and load to the LMS, the LMS will bookmark against the slides...which means it will restart within 5 minutes of where the learner was in watching the video.  I usually dress it up by importing title and navigation slides that I created in PowerPoint.

If someone knows an easier way to do this, I'd love to hear about it.
