What platform/language to choose when creating an online course?

Dec 16, 2019

Hello everyone,

I'm Sarah and I'm an English Teacher.

I have been working with Articulate and WordPress over the past 3 years as well and now it's time to create my own English course.

I know that I need to talk to a professional about this, but I was wondering what to use first when I want to create a course like that?

I wanted to start with articulate but I don't think that's a good idea considering how big a project that course is. I'm working on it using LearnPress in WordPress but I was wondering if I should actually use coding to create a course like that?

How different would it be if I create this using LearnPress or coding like HTML or Javascript?

any thoughts?

Thanks :)

Setting aside the size of your course, and whether it could be streamlined at all, whether you should get your hands dirty by coding in HTML and JavaScript will depend on whether or not you can build a course to meet your needs using Storyline.

Have you encountered anything you can't build in Storyline but that you'd like to include in your course?

What are the objectives of your English course? Without knowing the objectives, it is hard to know how to advise you about what authoring environment will be the best fit.

Is this a course about reading? About writing? About speaking? Is it for native speakers of English or for students whose first language is not English? What kind of activities/assignments will the course ask students to complete? Will those be graded/assessed in the course or outside the course by an instructor (e.g., you)? Will students be taking this online course as a component of a blended learning curriculum or as a stand-alone lesson? Will students be taking the course together as a cohort (meaning, you might want them to be able to have discussions with each other) or individually on a self-paced basis?

With more understanding about your goals it will be easier to recommend possible authoring environments.

Hi Sarah,

If you're planning to use LearnDash LMS/LearnPress LMS/ WP Courseware. You can test your Articulate Content with xAPI settings here: https://demo.nextsoftwaresolutions.com/

If you test your content in a running test environment, you will be able to see how it works and looks like.

This site is a combination of all three LMS(s) mentioned above. GrassBlade xAPI Companion plugin is used to add Experience API support and it is connect with GrassBlade Cloud LRS for reporting.

What you can test?

  1. Upload your content (for tracking use xAPI).
  2. Add your content in any of three LMS(s).
  3. Add your content on a normal page or lesson/topic/quiz.
  4. If tracking is enabled, track your learner's progress in LRS.

I hope you find this information useful. If you have any problem using anything on the site feel free to reply here or email me from my profile.

Thanks & Regards

Hi Sara,

If you're still looking for options, then I reckon you can achieve the creation of the course without any significant coding. I see online courses as a "tech-enabled" business — not the one that requires heavy technology infrastructure.

An out-of-the-box solution mostly works the best for educators/creators with an audience who just wants to create and sell their training material.

If you're already on Articulate, then there's a plugin (GrassBlade xAPI Companion) to upload your Articulate Storyline or Rise 360 content to WordPress directly. Here's the support thread for that: https://community.articulate.com/discussions/building-better-courses/how-to-upload-your-articulate-storyline-or-rise-content-on-wordpress. On the other hand, LearnDash is another robust WordPress option you can consider.

I am a part of an online course creation community (Create Awesome Online Courses) that also offer one of their WordPress out-of-the-box solution in CourseCats. They even offer a "concierge service." But that solution could get really costly at about 600 $ per year. LearnDash is much more economical.

If you're still wanting a more extensive online course platforms comparison I walk through both WordPress and non-WordPress options here: https://elitecontentmarketer.com/best-online-course-platforms/

Thanks,

Chintan
