The file "..." is read only, being used by another process error
I am receiving this error when publishing to a word document. I have been able to publish to articulate review without issue. , my articulate storyline 360 updated on 9/6. I have uninstalled the program and reinstalled. I have restarted and shut my system completely down and I am working on a local drive. None of the tips that I have read in older discussions seem to be working. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Yay! Glad this was able to help you out Stephania :)

Glad to hear it Stephania.

Hi, I had the same issue. I followed Stephen's advice, shortening the title, but it still wouldn't print to Word. I changed the player skin, and with the shorter title, that did the trick!

HI, I am having this issue, but not when publishing to Word. I am just getting it now and then when I try to save. I am saving to my local hard drive.
Hi there, Anne. Saving locally is a good first step, so thanks for confirming! Is it possible that you have automatic back-up software running at all?
If this is happening on just one file, I would recommend doing a Save As and using a slightly different file name, e.g. ProjectName_v2. Let me know if that helps!

I still have this issue with storyline every so often. I save local and on my network drive. I usually have to close everything and restart my computer 3-5 times to get it to work. I have no idea WHY that works and it is super disruptive to my work day, but at least the file opens..
Hi, Sarah!
I'm sorry to hear this and would love to help you find a sustainable fix.
A good first step is to try a Save As and use a different file name.
If that doesn't help, would you be willing to connect with our Support Engineers so we can pull a few system logs to help us get to the root of the issue?

I've received this error message a few times and while saving as a different file name could work, this error occurs while trying to open the file. So the file doesn't open for you to be able to save it. I think you could copy and paste the file as a different name/version into a different folder. I work on a Windows machine and it seems like it stays on the verge of maxing out the storage. When I get this same error message, I will first purge my temp folder. If you're trying to open the file by double-clicking on it from your folder location, you can open Storyline first, then use "Browse for more" to open it. If all else fails, a restart sometimes does the trick for me.

Hi! Me and my colleagues are having this issue. When publishing to Word we first get the Storyline error report window, then the error message. We have tried to update Storyline, work from and publish to a local drive, use 'Save as' to change the file name, remove blank spaces, remove å, ä, ö (both the file name and name in the Publish window). We have tried different storylinefiles, same error. Nothing works. I'm in contact with our IT department as well to see if they have made any security updates that might interfere with Storyline.

Hi Sofie,
Thanks for letting us know about the troubleshooting steps that you've already taken. I understand that you've already reached out to your IT department, but we'll also be glad to take a look at your project file to see why you're encountering issues with publishing. Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here or in private by opening a support case for testing? We'll delete it when we're done!

I am having the same issue. No one else on the team is having this issue with their program. It happens with every Storyline file I created and use now. I get two popup error messages: 1) We're sorry, something went wrong with Articulate Storyline and it might close... 2) The folder 'ABC123' is read-only, being used by another process or you do not have the proper security permission to access this resource.
The license was recently updated. And, I received a new laptop with Windows 11. IT checked permissions, and I have full access.
I submitted a support ticket and will post the results here.

Hi Joe
Sure, thanks! It seems to happen on all of our project files, here's one of them.
Hello Sofie!
I'm happy to jump in; sorry for the trouble publishing to Word! I appreciate you sharing the Storyline file, which I tried publishing to Word successfully; see the attached output document.
May I know what Microsoft Office version is installed on your computer? These are the supported versions for Storyline 360:
- Microsoft Office 365 (desktop apps only) or the latest perpetual version of Microsoft Word (32-bit or 64-bit)
Please also double-check that you don't have custom File Block Settings enabled. Here's how:
- Open an existing Word document or create a new one.
- Go to the File tab on the ribbon and click Options.
- Select the Trust Center tab on the left side of the window.
- Click the Trust Center Settings button on the right side of the window.
- Select the File Block Settings tab on the left side of the window.
- Click Restore Defaults in the lower right corner.
- Click OK three times to save your changes and exit Word Options.
- Republish your Storyline course.
If the problem persists, could I have you connect with us in a case so we can determine what's happening? We'll reach out soon after we hear from you!

Hi Eric,
Version installed is: Microsoft® Word for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2302 Build 16.0.16130.20754) 64-bit
I followed your instructions and the problem persists.
Thank you, I'll open a case!

Hi again!
I've just been in contact with our IT department and they recently decided to block the 2007 .doc version of word because it's a security risk. This is probably the cause of the error message in Storyline. I guess there are no settings to change the word format in Storyline?
Thanks for your reply and for reporting this is in a support case, Sophie! I see that Darwin picked up the case with a response. I'm sharing it below to benefit our community members who are subscribed to this thread.
I can see that your IT department has decided to block the 2007 .doc version. Please note that Storyline's Publish to Word feature currently utilizes *.doc format. With that said, this version should be enabled for the publish to Word feature to work.
There's no option to change the format of Word output. But we are currently tracking a *.docx format output feature. I'll include your case in this request and let you know if this feature becomes available. Check out this article to learn how we manage feature requests.
Let's continue the conversation in your support case, but I'm happy to assist further as needed!
