Custom line spacing not holding on Master Slide items

Oct 28, 2014

This looks like a bug to me. If I try to set up custom line spacing on a placeholder text box on a master slide the changes aren't remembered and don't appear in slides that have that master slide applied.

For example, I set up a master slide placeholder text box using 14 pt text and with the line spacing to equal "Exactly" 22 pts. When I click out of the text box on the master page it resets itself to "single." I am unable to fix the line spacing to anything other than "single."

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

(BTW, I'm trying to insert screen shots here but this image uploader isn't working...)

Hi Brett,

Thanks for sharing that here - and sorry that the image uploading wasn't working for you. It's something that we shared with our team in regards to ELH2 not working properly so they're looking into a fix for that - in the meantime you could still attach the image as a file.

As for the issue you're seeing with the placeholder text on the slide masters, I do see that has been reported to our QA team. I don't have any updates to share at this time, but I'll add this thread to the existing report filed with them so that once I have information to share I can add it here.

I'm having this issue too - now Jan 2107. Seems QA isn't actively doing anything if it's still an issue after so long, and especially with 360 now out they're probably focusing development toward the new version and discontinuing updates such as this on 2.

I did test in a trial version of 360, and the issue does not exist, but as our team must work with people who won't be upgrading, and files are not downward compatible even one version (?!?), we cannot upgrade either.

Will fixes for issues like this in Storyline 2 continue to be indefinitely put off in favor of 360?

Hi Diana,

We will still continue to support our perpetual products such as Storyline 2, but the updates to the perpetual products have and will continue to be less frequent than the updates you're seeing to the Articulate 360 subscription products.

As for this particular issue, it was something that was fixed in Storyline 360 and our team will also look at if that fix can be ported back into Storyline 2 as well, but I don't have an update to share on that currently.

We'll keep you posted about any updates or changes to that here.

I just wanted to add to the "pain report".  We have a client whose style standards define specific line spacing and points after paragraphs and there's a different spacing for bulleted lists.  Recently, they've asked us to use AS2 to recreate 51 existing courses (with an average of 25 pages each and multiple text boxes on several pages).  It's bad enough having to apply formatting to every bulleted list, but also having to manually apply this text formatting to each and every page/text box is time consuming, at best.  As pointed out by someone else in another post, this affects our quote to the client on how long it will take us to create the courses.  Moving to 360 is not an option because we have to support what the client uses.

I also discovered this - what I consider a bug - that the layout formats get "lost" somehow. I spent an entire day trying to recreate layouts in SL2 that we were using in PowerPoint, and then found this thread. It seems like such a basic thing - if you can import ppt slides, it is a time waster if all the formatting cannot easily be fixed by applying a SL layout.

Hi Chantal,

Sorry that you had to go through that whole process and frustration before finding this forum discussion. I know that we’ve had this issue on our radar for awhile.  We'll continue to share all of your feedback to our QA team, and we’ll post any updates here in this discussion. Since you've responded you'll be subscribed here so you should get those updates via email.

Hi Ashley, are there any news on this issue regarding SL2? We have just updated from SL1 to SL2, so there is no chance to get a new version again already. I must use Arial and follow my companies style rules which incorporate a line spacing of 1.15 (multiple lines). Without this, Arial looks bad, so to have this function applied to SL2 would save us a lot of work applying the different line spacing to each and every placeholder. I agree with those who say it's a bug, because when the dropdown is there while you are editing a slide master, it should work. Thanks for looking into this again.

Hi Nina,

Thanks for checking in on the issue with slide master placeholders and line spacing. It's still an open issue in Storyline 2, but was something fixed in Storyline 360 and Storyline 3.

When did you complete your upgrade to Storyline 2? Depending on that timing and your license/serial number it may be an option to swap Storyline 2 for Storyline 3? If you're interested in talking through those options, can you reach out to us here?

Hi there.

I'm experiencing this issue in Storyline 360.

On the master slide text box I'm adjusting the line spacing options to 'Spacing - After 12 pts / Line spacing - Exactly 24pts', but it's not saving when I close the slide master and go back into it. I go back in to the setting and it's set itself to 'Spacing - After 16.67 pts / Line spacing - Exactly 33.33 pts'.

It doesn't matter what I change the settings to, they keep defaulting back to these numbers.

Any idea on how to save the changes and stop it defaulting to these random numbers?

Hi there Tom!

Sorry that's happening to you--I'm sure it's frustrating to have to adjust the paragraph settings over and over.

I haven't seen this issue in Storyline 360 in my own testing, so I'm curious what version of Storyline 360 you're using. To check, click the Help tab, then click About Storyline. You should see 3.16.15842.0 in the bottom-right corner.

If you're not on that version, go ahead and download the latest update. Let me know if that helps!

Hi there, BSI.  I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble!  Can you help me try to reproduce the behavior you're seeing?  Take a Peek of making the slide master settings, and then using that layout on a slide.  I want to be sure I'm understanding and following the same process!

You can reply back with that screencast, and we'll take it from there.

I discovered this today myself, even though it was reported 4 years ago.

In the slide master click on a text block. Change Paragraph Spacing After to any number, such as 14 pt. and click OK. Click off the text and back again. The After Spacing is now a larger number.

Exit the slide master and select a slide using that master. Check the After Spacing of the text on that page. It's also a larger number.
