Free LMS to import Articulate Storyline Scorm

Nov 20, 2014

We had a project that we used Articulate Storyline for. We used CourseSites to import the SCORM modules into and track to make sure students viewed every slide. Everything worked great, until CourseSites had an issue that caused them to take away the SCORM implementation only on CourseSites. So my question is, what other free LMS systems are out there that can import an Articulate Storyline SCORM project and track the users progression through slides? We need the project to be an open enrollment for anyone to join, which is why we chose CourseSites. At the top of my list for researching is EdX and Moodle. But I wanted to ask the community what their knowledge is.

I'd just suggest you are careful about how you understand "Free" - Moodle is open-source but you must find somewhere to host it yourself unless you pay someone to do that for you. This requires someone with technical knowledge and you should also make sure you develop some form of long-term upgrade plan - when and how often you will upgrade the product. This applies for any self-hosted LMS you choose to use.

I can offer some guidance around Moodle (check my profile for bias) - Moodle is a large full-blown LMS with a diverse feature set and lots of 3rd party plugins and can be configured in a wide range of ways to suit organisational needs. If you are only looking for something to play SCORM content then Moodle may be a much bigger system than you actually need.

Moodle only officially supports the SCORM 1.2 and AICC standards, limited support for SCORM 2004 packages is there but it is buggy and we aren't doing much further development on the 2004 version of SCORM in Moodle (but we still provide further development and lots of support for SCORM 1.2 packages)

?That is ok about SCORM 1.2. We can export to that with Storyline. What other LMS systems would you recommend for simply playing SCORM content and recording and tracking results on individual students? Like I said, CourseSites gave us that simple ability, but has become unreliable this week. I know another company could be unreliable too, I just want to know my options.
