Specifying a value to a fill-in-the-blank question

Hi Christie

I have attached the slide as you suggested.  I wonder if there is some way of assigning a numeric value to each letter submitted by the learner.  As you can see, the question is worth 3 marks if each of the 6 letters is entered correctly.  However, the learner can still gain marks, albeit not the full 3, if some of the letters are entered.

I have been trying to create a variable that might address the issue but without success.

The tutorial you mention is one with which I am familiar but it does not provide me with an answer as I need to assign a value to each letter rather than offer the learner a number of optional answers which have a pre-defined value.

Unfortunately, beyond the suggestions I have offered, I am not aware of a way for you to create the desired effect of assigning a point value to each letter. I have updated your sample file to what I think you are after.  If you look at the form view of the quiz slide I have assigned 2 marks for a correct answer and 1 mark for an incorrect answer.  There are two offstage buttons called correct and incorrect which are what triggers the correct / incorrect layers to appear.

You'll just need to change the surname letters I used BARKER as the sample.

I have updated your SL1 file.

1. The correct/incorrect buttons that sit off stage need to be on the baselayer )not on a slide layer) and then added into the form view so that SL knows what the correct answer is.

2. The correct variables need to be used for each trigger  - all updated.

3. Order of triggers very important - so the change of state to selected for the correct/incorrect button need to be before the 'submit interaction' button

I have tested and the correct/incorrect layers are displaying as above images show.

My apologies for the delay in responding to you.  I am now using Storyline 2 and have downloaded the updated file.  Unfortunately, I find that the following error message is appearing

Could this have anything to do with the change to SL2?  Also, when I use the Tab key to move from box to box, it jumps to the 'Correct' then Incorrect' areas before returning to box no 1.

Had a quick look and your 'choice' variable is displaying as a text variable not a number variable even though it is setup as a number which is why it's not calculating the score. If you put the variable references onto the screen its easy to see what is and isn't working.

You'll need to create a new choice number variable and replace it in all the triggers

Go to the  Home Tab  > Tab order option you can do custom tab order and add, remove, re-order how you want the objects to appear when you tab

See attached screenshots and let me know if you still have issues once you make the choice

I have managed to update the file to register the correct numerical value assigned to each text entry.  However, I cannot figure out a way to reset the text entry values in order to allow the learner to re-attempt the question.  (I have hidden the Counter on the Timeline)

I discovered how to reset the tab order on the slide but I cannot access the 'Save' button because the Tab Order' window extends onto the Task Bar and is inaccessible.  (Thought: maybe I could alter the screen resolution?)

Any help would be much appreciated.  I think we are getting nearer to success! :-)

Also you have a trigger to resume timeline on the 'Try again' button when the user clicks but this is offstage and they'll never see it to click it.

I found that by using the default 'Submit' button I was getting the 'Invalid Answer' error message.  So, by creating a customized version, I was able to set up a relevant trigger to control the outcome.

I still cannot figure out a way to reset the slide (other than a message to click on the 'Replay' button) in order that the text values are removed from the text entry boxes.  The counter is set to return to 0 and is working.

The Tab Order issue is noted in the image below.  I cannot access the Save or Cancel buttons despite the screen resolution being set at the recommended 1366*768.

is your preferred method to use the inbuilt player nav or you want to use custom buttons?  I can try and work with the inbuilt one to see if we can work through it if you like - just let me know before I spend time on it.

see if this works for you.

I have used the default Submit button and hidden your custom one on the timeline. I have added triggers to select the correct or incorrect button on the base layer when the user clicks submit - these triggers need to be before the 'submit interaction' trigger.

I have added triggers to the try again layer to set the text entry boxes (all 6) to blank when the user clicks the try again button.

Hope this is what you are after...let me know how you go.

I can't see the tab order you need - if you send through a full screenshot of how you want them I'll try and save it for you.

I hope my virtual hug reaches you across cyberspace and enfolds you in a huge embrace.  I will now endeavour to continue on with my project without bothering you again (unless I get stuck!)

I have learned so much in the last few weeks - nothing like going straight in at the deep end, eh?! It has certainly been a steep learning curve for a newbie, but I have no doubt it will stand me in good stead.

The Tab Order issue was easily resolved by adjusting the Properties of the Task Bar (r-click) and selecting the Auto-Hide checkbox.  All systems are go.
