Submit does not show on a question slide. Next does but is inactive.

Sep 19, 2016

Hi all, has anyone have the Prev/Next buttons show up on a question slide only in production when the Submit button should be showing? Can't really reproduce it but I have seen it in my production modules every now and then. Just had it happen again in production and in development, the submit is checked and Prev/Next are turned off.

Hey there, Arnie.  That's definitely weird if it is happening sporadically.  Could you confirm if you are working on your local C: drive?

Also, does this happen with every project, or just one?  If just one, I might recommend importing those slides into a new project to see if that eliminates the inconsistencies.  If this is happening with every project, I'd say start with a repair of your Storyline software.

And when you say in production, how are you viewing the published output?  You'll want to be sure to view it in its intended environment (on a web server, or in an LMS for example).

Also, feel free to share your work here by using the Add Attachment button, and we can take a look.

Hi Crystal, thanks for your response. StoryLine is on the C Drive, but the source files are on an external hard drive. We don't save anything to the C as it is not backed up. I have seen it on different projects. It only happens in our LMS. In preview mode it works fine. The only way to reproduce it is in our LMS which is Lawson Infor, so attaching it would not reproduce it. Just was wondering if anyone else had seen this.  Thanks again.

Hi, Rebecca. Really sorry you've come across this button issue.

While I don't have any extra insight to share from Arnie's case, we're happy to keep digging! To start fresh, could I gather a few details from you?

  • What version of Storyline are you using?
  • Did you publish the course for Web, LMS, or something else?
  • Do you notice any trends in the affected learners' environment–are they on the same browser, Windows version, etc.?
Rebecca Champagne

Katie,

Thanks for the response!

  • This is happening after publication.
  • I'm using Storyline 3, SCORM 1.2 output, in an Oracle LMS.
  • We typically find that our LMS prefers Google Chrome browser, but this particular problem is happening in both IE and Chrome.
  • I've seen it with both multi-response and text-entry questions.

Some troubleshooting I've done:

  • Asked users to try different browsers.
  • Asked users to clear cache.
  • Asked users to try hitting "enter" to progress/submit incorrect blank response. (this works for text entry questions to pass the user onto the next screen, but records as incorrect.
  • Checked that the questions allow only 1 attempt.  (This came from another post on the community where someone was experiencing problems with the submit button not appearing.)
  • Set the Storyline course to open as a separate window when launched in the LMS (and NOT to do so).
  • Made sure the "Previous/Next buttons" are unchecked in the Slide Properties.

I've attached a screen-shot (with content blurred), for your reference.

Thanks for the details Rebecca and for sharing the troubleshooting that you've done so far.

It's certainly hard when you are unable to replicate the behavior.

Curious if the slide properties are set to 'Reset to Initial State' and the users are navigating back to the slides after submitting. This would display the slide in 'Review Mode' to the user and I would expect to see those Prev/Next buttons.

If you need us to take a look, you are welcome to share the file privately with our team here.

Leslie,

Thank you for the followup.  Yes, the slide is set to "reset to initial state."  Additionally, users are reporting the problem on their first attempt at the course--NOT after a revisit.

This problem is not associated with just one course, but has happened on at least two courses.  The first, with the text entry question; and now, also with multi-response.

Thanks for the additional information Rebecca.

So, they are seeing this behavior when visiting the slide for the first time? As in, they were never able to answer the question?

Are you able to replicate this behavior in SCORM Cloud or it's only limited users in your LMS?

If you'd like to share your .story file with our support team, you may do so here.

Hey, Leslie, I'm having this same issue! It's super weird and random.  This HIPAA course is published on our Absorb LMS as a SCORM 2004.

Some users (about 5 about of 300) are having a question show up with the buttons already selected for them (on the first try) They see a Next button, not the "Submit button" - and they can't select the NEXT button.

It seems like a corrupted SCORM or upload error. We can't reproduce this error, but we're getting it consistently on a small number of users.

They are using Chrome and Edge browsers, and are in different offices around the country.

Any suggestions to fix this?

Hi Kate,

Thanks for sharing those screenshots of what some of your learners are experiencing. If you're unable to replicate the issue and it's happening to a small number of learners, I'm afraid there's no quick fix for it.

You can try testing the course in a different environment, such as SCORM Cloud, and sending invitations to those affected to see if similar results appear. If possible, you can also have them try the course in other browsers outside of Chrome/Edge, to see if that helps.

I'm sorry there isn't an easy solution here, but if this keeps happening in the future, you can connect with our support team for additional guidance!
