Videos wont play automatically

Mar 03, 2017

I have several scenes in a story that the user clicks an icon and a layer is shown.  On the layer is a video that is set to play automatically.  But the videos require the user to click to play rather than starting automatically.  As I have no user controls showing there is no why they know to do this.

How can I get the video to play automatically when the layer is revealed?

I am publishing for web and the videos are in MP4 format.

Hi SibaPrasad,

Since this is an older discussion, can you clarify what you're running into? Only some browsers, not all, have disabled audio and video to autoplay, so that may be what you're experiencing, but please let us know if it's something different!

Hi Regina! I apologize for the issues you are experiencing with autoplay on your videos.

Is this an issue with one particular video you have, or all videos where you try to enable an autoplay trigger?

Which browser are you using? Some browsers, including Google Chrome and Safari, no longer allow audio and video content to autopay, and this can affect your Storyline course

If that's not what you are experiencing, please share your .story file with us either publicly here, or privately in a case. We will delete it from our systems when troubleshooting is complete.

We have just resolved this issue on one of our courses! So I just wanted to share the solution to this old post for those reading this far and still seeing the problem.

Essentially we had the first page of the course a splash page (with no video) transitioning automatically into a second page which was a video with autoplay turned on. The video refused to play regardless of all the workarounds posted.

We found that we had to create a start button on the first page rather than automatically transitioning to the next page. This then allowed the video to autoplay on the following page.

The reason this was happening for us (IMO) is that Chrome and some other browsers do not allow for the autoplay of video content within embedded media until you interact with the media. This is why you had to click on the video to make it play, however, if you have previously clicked on an interaction (like a button for example) then the browser allows for the autoplay function from there onwards.

It was a frustrating 'bug' for us as all the other videos worked within the course except for the first one.

So for those who are still struggling try this one.
