Issue: GIFs won't play if any formatting applied

After inserting GIFs into my story, they will not play if I apply cropping or an image shape. The Preview loading time when attempting this is also excruciatingly long (10-20x longer than normal) or Storyline outright crashes.

GIFs will play normally if no such edits are applied.

I can edit the GIFs outside storyline, if necessary - but is this expected behaviour?

  • Hello Daniel!

Thank you for reaching out! I've tested this on my end with a gif and even when cropping, the gif plays in Preview. Have you found this occurs with every gif you import into Storyline 360 or just this specific one? Additionally, are both the gif and .story files saved locally? Often times, a delay will occur if the file is saved to a shared or network drive.

Lastly, it would be helpful if you could share your .story file! You can share it in this discussion or privately in a support case.

  • Having the same issue - my Gif will not play - Storyline is treating it like a static image.  Not sure what I am doing wrong.  File size is only 33KB.  I have inserted as picture - clicked preview - but it does nothing.

  • Hello AndrewHoskins-e

I'm sorry about the trouble, and I appreciate you sharing the GIF file you're using.

I tried inserting it into the attached Storyline project alongside a sample GIF file, and I can confirm that the one on the left seems like a static image, but the other one is playing in preview.

I recommend testing other GIF files to see if the issue will happen with a new Storyline project. I attached the sample GIF I used so you can compare. If the sample GIF is also static in preview and you're already working on your local drive, I suggest running these steps to fix possible installation issues

Let me know how it goes, and I'll be more than happy to assist further. If you want more targeted help, please feel free to connect with us privately in a support case.

Thank you.  I did not see an attachment on your response.  I will try to find a GIF to test though.

You're welcome, Andrew. The GIF file may not have gone through the first time. Let me attach it again here.

Please keep me posted. Thank you!
