Browser Screen Flashes Between Slides

Mar 07, 2017

Hi all,

When playing a published Storyline 360 project (v3.3.9986.0) in a Chrome web browser, I experience a single brief white-screen flash when I move/navigate between the slides/screens.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks in advance,

Simon

I've also been experiencing this, and it's an issue because I'm trying to create a video-like feel. I'm attaching the published zip and the story file. Any ideas on how to make this stop would be much appreciated. (Note: The flash doesn't always happen on every slide. It's present in both web publish and publish to 360 review.)

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for sharing a copy of your file! What browser(s) are you testing it in? I uploaded a copy of your course to Tempshare and you can view it here. I tested it on Firefox for Mac and Chrome for Windows 10 and Mac.  I didn't see the flash that you mentioned - but wanted to see if you could give this one a test?

I also tested it in Articulate Review and you can test that one here.

Take a look at let me know how those behave for you!

Hi,

we're building a short interactive quiz with Storyline 360. It's very important to us that we have smooth transitions between slides. However, upon testing on different browsers we have experienced white flickering when the next slide is loading. There is no transition effect between slides, all objects are aligned to timeline start (0,00 sec) and there are no animations on individual objects. We are testing on Articulate Review, exported to HTML5 with FLASH fallback.

Can this be fixed?

These are our testing results if that helps:

MAC Chrome - no flicker

MAC Safari - flicker

MAC Firefox - no flicker

PC Chrome - no flicker

PC Firefox - no flicker

PC IE 11 -  flicker

PC Edge - flicker

iPAD Chrome - flicker

iPAD Safari - loading dots with short flicker

Thanks in advance if anyone has figured this out.

Hi Marina,

The tempshare link that I shared before has likely expired, but can you test the Review link I shared earlier? I haven't experienced the "flash" myself- but would be curious to know if you see it on that copy shared? I'd also like to take a look at your course and give it a test in a few of the environments you mentioned!

Do you know in each of the instances if you were viewing the HTML5 or the Flash output?

Hey Ashley,

thanks for your reply, I really appreciate this. I quickly tested your Review link and the white flash appears between slides the same as in my testing list from previous post. (I'm attaching a short screen recording while testing on Safari - MAC).

I'm also attaching .story file for you to test (this is not the original file but the same thing happens here as well). You can see it on this Review link also.

I have tested LMS export and white flash appears as per my first testing results. Our internet speed is very good so it's not a slow connection\loading issue.

I have flash disabled in all my browser for testing purposes so I'm sure I'm looking at  HTML5 versions of all exports.

Hope this helps us all :)

Thanks.

Marina

Hi there Marina, sorry this is plaguing you! We've got issue on our radar where Storyline 360 HTML5 output subtly flickers when viewed on Internet Explorer 11 and Edge, and that sounds like what you're describing. It also sounds like this is happening in Chrome and Safari on iPad, as well. I'll be sure to let the team know about your experience and add this forum thread to the report.

As soon as we get more information, I'll let you know. Thanks again for bringing this up, and I'm sorry if it's been slowing you down!

Hi all,

Great news!  We just released another update for Articulate 360, and included a few important fixes and new features that you'll see in the release notes here.

The item you'll be interested in is how we fixed the issue where HTML5 output would blink or flicker between slides in Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge.

Just launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for each application. Details here.

Please let us know if you have any questions, either here or by reaching out to our Support Engineers directly.

Hi all,

A quick update, this fix is now also included in the latest update for Storyline 3. Updates are free for Storyline 3 licensees and you can download the latest update here. You can also view the entire list of Release notes for Storyline 3 here.

Please let us know if you have any questions!

Hi Margit,

Thanks for sharing that and I found your case with Jonathan. It appears the issue you're experiencing is slightly different than the one discussed in this forum discussion (where it only impacted HTML5 output in IE11) since you're seeing this in IE and Chrome.

We've got a new issue filed as a possible bug with our team, and we'll keep you posted here in ELH and as a part of the support case.
