Project won't save - Storyline 2

Sep 23, 2014

Getting a different error nearly every time.

Cannot access part because parent package was closed.

Cannot access a closed stream

Store must be open for this operation.

What gives? I can't re-save it as a new file. I'm screwed. About to lose half a day of work here. Any help? We've had this for less than a week, and never had (major) issues with Storyline 1, like this. Saving on C drive. Windows 7.

Please get back to me asap.

Sadly I need to report I'm experiencing this issue as well.  I just submitted it, case number 00448583.  Using the latest update to SL2, saving to C drive, Windows 7, same problem on two different PCs.  Using lots of mp4 video in these projects.  My goal is to open existing SL1 projects in SL2 and swap out the video with higher quality mp4 files (saved with "high profile") and use the "none" compression setting.

My experience: Importing from SL1, project will not save in SL2. I get the same error messages that others are reporting. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, all to no avail. I then tried just importing one scene at a time from the SL1 file. That worked one time but when I try to replace the videos with higher quality versions, SL2 won't even let me insert the video. The name of the video is on the timeline but the screen is blank.

I'll be checking this thread often so please do keep us posted on your progress in resolving this issue.  I know it's the holidays but I hope someone is there working this week...I'm already behind in my work. Thank you!

This happened to me this morning with the trial version of Storyline 2 that I just downloaded. My manager tasked me with looking into Storyline 2 to see if the new features were worth the upgrade cost to purchase for all of our developers.

I opened from SL1 file and I have a bunch of video in the project. I was playing around with the new features (which are very cool) and when I went to save I received the errors, "Cannot access a closed Stream" and "Store must be open for this operation."  I tried the "task manager" shutdown solution that I saw in this thread but when I opened up the file it DID NOT ask if I wanted to recover and none of my changes were saved.

I'm so glad I found this thread before purchasing!!! I will keep an eye on this thread and when this issue is fixed I will reevaluate. We use video in every one of our courses so this will definitely need to be fixed before we buy.

Is this problem still not fixed? I've gone back to using SL1 because I've lost/wasted too much time with lost work from SL2 not saving. My boss is seriously unhappy about the money spent for software I am not using. I saw that there is an update to SL2 so I came checking here with the hope that the new update fixes the problem, but it sounds like not...?

Hi all,

Storyline 2 Update 4 was released Friday, which included the following fixes:

  • Fixed issue where a project file couldn't be saved due to "Store must be open for this operation" error
  • Fixed issue where temp files weren't purging, which could prevent project files from saving
  • Fixed issue where Quizmaker '09 quizzes couldn't be imported with Flash Player 16 installed

To install the latest update for Articulate Storyline 2, use the download link in your product activation email, or download the latest installer here. Updates are free for existing Storyline 2 licensees.

This sounds like great news! I purchased the Storyline 2 upgrade in December but have held off on installing it after reading about this issue. I am so excited to dig in, but before I install the upgrade, can some of those who were experiencing the issue confirm that the latest update did in fact resolve the problem? Thanks!

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Monique,

The update did go through beta testing with a few users who shared information here in the forums and through connected with our Support engineers to determine if the updates made resolved the issue. I'm not sure which of them are subscribed to this thread - so I hope that they chime in. If you are still having difficulty after going through the update, please let us know as soon as possible by submitting the specifics of the error message to our Support engineers.

I'm happy to report that the update seems to have resolved my issues with trying to import SL1 projects with video.  My goal is to replace the video in my SL1 projects with higher quality versions (and also to get the Android player support).  I just tried doing that with a test project using the latest update and it appears to be working fine.

Hello all,

I downloaded the latest installer yesterday and unfortunately am still experiencing issues with saving. Immediately after the install SL2 worked well and I was able to get half of my project completed and saved. However today it hasn't allowed me to save at all. I've submitted a ticket to support- case #00452042 . I uploaded my file after as well, but before I found this thread. While the file was one updated from SL1, I am not using videos in my project. I have an extremely tight deadline and my manager was expecting a completed project by end of the day today. I'm simply updating branding and adding a slide so it should have been easy enough to complete in the day. Any updates or further help would be much appreciated! Thanks so much.

Has this problem been fixed yet?  I imported a set of ppt slides and completed the presentation in SL2.  Now I can't save the file.  I'm getting "cannot access a disposed project.  "storyline Package".  There is no audio or video in the presentation.

My SL2 is set to check for updates every time it launches, so I should have the most recent version.

Hi Annette,

A number of the issues detailed in this thread were fixed in Update 4 of Storyline in regards to project files that could not be saved as you'll see here. There are also directions there on how to purge the temp files, which may be something you'd want to look into and double check that you have update 4. You can click on the Help tab -> About Articulate Storyline to see your settings. Storyline will only check for the updates when opened and connected to the internet.

I haven't seen that error message before, so if you continue to see if after looking into the above I'd like to ask if you could share a screenshot of the error and a copy  of the imported PPT file or the SL2 file as it saved (if you have any saved copy of it).

Hi Ashley,

I followed your instructions to check my version.  I have the most current update 4: 1501.717 which is also what is shown when I go to the update page.

I also tried dumping my temp files per the instructions provided.

Still having same issue.

I'm attaching a screenshot and the ppt file I imported.

Thanks,

Annette

addendum:

The problem must be something specific to the file.  I tried to go back to storyline 1 and open an existing file to see what happens.  It opened storyline 2 instead.  I then opened an existing Storyline2  file, renamed it, and saved it.  No problems.  Then I tried to open the problem file that I had not been able to save.  I received a message saying it is corrupt or created in earlier version of storyline.  I'm attaching that file now.  The only things I did in this file that I don't often do are 1) imported PPT slides and 2) used an E-Learning Brothers template in the PPT.  I had not yet added audio or video to the file.

Hi Annette,

Thanks for checking into those items and sharing the file here. I imported this into Storyline 2 Update 4 on my system and it did seem to take a bit longer than I'd expect but it did successfully import the project without any errors and I was able to save it as well. Can you take a look at my attached copy here?

Are you seeing this error with all Powerpoint imports or saving all project files even just new projects in Storyline? To test this out, just try a one slide project in Storyline to see how it saves or try saving the copy I've shared here with the imported PPT.

If you're seeing the error across multiple set ups I'd ask for you to go through the repair steps detailed here.
