Studies suggest that our brains love pleasant surprises. Adding some unpredictability to your courses can help draw learners in. One great way to do this is by adding a random word or phrase generator to your course. With this type of interaction, you set a predefined list of variables that display at random when learners complete an action.

If you’re curious about how you might use randomly generated words and phrases in your own projects, I have some examples (and downloads!) from the E-Learning Heroes community to inspire you:

  1. Trina Rimmer shows how to transform learner input into something fun and unexpected in this beautifully designed download.
  2. Tracy Carroll built a fun MadLibs-style game where learners choose their responses from a set of phrases.
  3. Matthew Bibby shares how to generate random words from a list with his helpful download and accompanying tutorial.
  4. Allison Goldthorpe demonstrates that content selected randomly from different categories can be combined to display fun ideas.
  5. Meaghan Lister mixes bold background images with randomly generated text to create a unique experience every time.
